How to profit from Betting Exchanges (BEX)

How would you like to trade a market where you get large regular price swings every 10 minutes in the afternoon, seven days a week. A
market where all prices are set purely by supply and demand, few transaction costs, no middle men and you only pay commission if you win? Where you can freely act as a market maker and where you have direct market access and where you can create a spread for others to take?

Betfair has revolutionised the betting market and created an open platform for exchanging risk on sports events. This market is now viewed much more like a traditional financial risk market than an old fashioned betting market. Smart users have realised that there are huge opportunities on Betfair because they can buy and sell risk in much the same way they would in a normal financial market but without the burden of cost or the restricted access that is usually associated with traditional financial markets.

Now I wonder if there is anything else to have go at. Darts maybe?

Harlosh - 04 Jan 2005 21:57 - 459 of 10502

Nice trade Steve.

Cheers john

Im already greened up on the aussie cricket starting at 11 - so im going to have a few hands of poker - won $1500 the last 2 nights

"but got a bit hairy" - Makes your heart thump doesn't it?

I was green on the draw but not the match when the goal that wasn't went in. Quickly started the trade again when the confusion cleared and finally stopped at 1.04 but probably could have nabbed one more trade before the match finished but I was a spent force by then!!

Scripophilist - 04 Jan 2005 22:23 - 462 of 10502

Fundy, that was the trade of the night as identified by Harlosh at the time. I didn't do it though as I had too many postions open already. Would have been a good one. You could have covered on the next goal market as well.

Q. Any body spot the error with this goal?

carroll_gaffe.jpg

A. Err, apparantly is wasn't one!! How utterly totally bizarre!! Spurs were robbed!

However on this occasion I would like to congratulate this referring decision!! ;-)

Was nosing around the financials today. Liquidity was terrible maybe I was in the market at the wrong time but even on the daily up/down the market was very thin. Too thin for me.

Darts has been interesting.

Scrip

the darts on sky has been very profitable for me - must now look at the one on the beeb

I always feel safe with ManU playing at home regardless of what happens!!

Scrip, it's not as obvious as all that, try this picture from a slightly different angle!

I don't know, I guess the ref couldn't see it. The entire stadium saw it, the entire football team and a few million people on TV but the ref or any of his assistants were unable to. I loved the look on Howards face as he tried to pretend he didn't know it had gone in, a picture.

DocProc - 05 Jan 2005 16:15 - 470 of 10502

Scrip

Is this you?

Arghh, You blew my cover!!

On the Southampton match tonight. Laid the draw and looking for a goal but if none comes I have coverage in hand.

Scripophilist - 05 Jan 2005 20:41 - 472 of 10502

All green.

Scripophilist - 06 Jan 2005 21:31 - 473 of 10502

So unlucky on Lazio tonight almost got 1k matched just before the third goal went in. Must have missed it by just milliseconds else 30% return for a few seconds work. So unlucky. Did ok anyhow but that was definately one that got away.

Dil - 06 Jan 2005 22:02 - 474 of 10502

Scrip , I laid the draw on the Soton match too , did you manage to cover after the first goal or did you have to wait til the third like me ?

Laid the draw again on after the fifth goal and greened up a few minutes later but the way they were banging them in it was a bit risky.

Pinsticker - 06 Jan 2005 22:52 - 475 of 10502

Forget this silly soccer lark, anyone playing CBB3? Interesting mix of nutters and odds at the moment.

Scripophilist - 06 Jan 2005 23:36 - 476 of 10502

Dil, I was on the phone to Betfair today asking why it takes so long to get the matches unsuspended after a goal (53 seconds it was timed at). A bit of a blank answered I am afraid. Betdaq settled the same match very quickly so the issue is an odd one. You would have thought you could act very quickly but Betfair seem very slow.

I had to wait till the third goal. I was covered on the draw up to 3-3 subject to at least having the opportunity to cover at some point.

Scripophilist - 07 Jan 2005 00:06 - 477 of 10502

Just finished number crunching all the data from November. I need a bigger PC the way this data is growing each month.

I'd like to start a guessing game by way of interest. What was the total of all matched bets on Betfair in November? Any guesses?

Will give everybody till Monday close of business to put a figure up.
