THE TALK TO YOURSELF THREAD. (NOWT)

goldfinger - 09 Jun 2005 12:25

Thought Id start this one going because its rather dead on this board at the moment and I suppose all my usual muckers are either at the Stella tennis event watching Dim Tim (lose again) or at Henly Regatta eating cucumber sandwiches (they wish,...NOT).

Anyway please feel free to just talk to yourself blast away and let it go on any company or subject you wish. Just wish Id thought of this one before.

cheers GF.

Our NHS may be about to fall into an abyss, but the Government have sent 750 military personnel to Sierra Leone to deal with the Ebola virus. Is that in addition to the £250million this country has already donated?

The Libs interpretation of the mansion tax is extra bands of council tax. They would use the current valuations as a base and revalue properties based on property inflation for given areas. Any properties close to the margin that might have crossed into the tax bands would be individually revalued. That would cut down on the work to revalue properties.

Interesting article on 'alien life' biological particles which have been found out in space using sterile slides launched into the Perseid meteor shower in 2013.

These have been found to have biological cosmic dust on them and absolutely no 'earth-like dust' and so it is concluded such biological particles must have come from the carbon and oxygen on comets.

The further conclusion is that this is the most likely scenario for how 'life' might have kicked off on earth.

Scientists say: Likely proof we are descended from extra terrestrials

I hope you enjoy listening to this and I don't think you will have ever heard anything like it before. It's called 'polyphonic overtone singing':

Haystack - 08 Oct 2014 19:40 - 47096 of 81564

The important part of the alien story is the phrase, 'in an interview with the Daily Express'. That really says it all. It is akin to 'in an interview with the Beano'.

Haystack

I would have thought you would like that news , being anti- Bible

goldfinger - 08 Oct 2014 20:17 - 47098 of 81564

Hays what do you think of the upcoming Tory defection to UKIP.

Haystack - 08 Oct 2014 21:11 - 47099 of 81564

I am not anti Bible. I am anti religion (that includes the bible). I am not sure the story constitutes news.

ExecLine - 08 Oct 2014 21:34 - 47100 of 81564

At times like this, I get to be anti-Haystack.

The 'Daily Express bit' is utterly and totally irrelevant and the Express is only mentioned by the Independent's journalist out of sheer politenes, IMHO.

There are a number of factual pieces of evidence in the piece, which 95% point to the fact that the particles under discussion did not and could not have ascended from the Earth.

Q. What has Oxygen and what has Carbon?

A. A comet.

Etc., etc. Hence the 95% certainty, that the biological particles came from outer space.

Haystack - 08 Oct 2014 21:48 - 47101 of 81564

The article doesn't warrant the headline 'Alien life found above Derbyshire proves we're descended from extraterrestrials' say scientists. It has all the hallmarks of a trumped Daily Express story.

Haystack - 08 Oct 2014 21:52 - 47102 of 81564

The story was published 3 days earlier in the Daily Express under the headline

The incredible picture that 'PROVES' there is life on other planets.

MaxK - 08 Oct 2014 23:16 - 47103 of 81564

Of course there's life on other planets!

Are they space faring species, or stuck on the ground like us (for now)?

Given the constraints of E=Mc^2, and a suitable propellent to cover the quite huge distances involved, it's unlikely we will see any martians anytime soon imo.

But the size of the cosmos is staggeringly huge...I find it hard to believe there isn't something out there...altho I suspect it unlikely to resemble

GORT KLAATU BARADA NIKTO

Haystack - 08 Oct 2014 23:20 - 47104 of 81564

I think there is life on other planets and I think we will NEVER see them in anyone's life. It just isn't possible to travel fast enough to get there ever.

Fred1new - 08 Oct 2014 23:23 - 47105 of 81564

Are you sure or is that another belief or bible?

MaxK - 08 Oct 2014 23:24 - 47106 of 81564

In our lifetime, no!

Sometime in the future, who knows, I would like to think so.

Haystack - 08 Oct 2014 23:33 - 47107 of 81564

Not in any lifetime. Fundamental laws of physics. We may visit and colonise planets though such as Mars and even do some Terra forming.

MaxK - 08 Oct 2014 23:36 - 47108 of 81564

Here is Klaatu’s message in it’s entirety – “I am leaving soon, and you will forgive me if I speak bluntly. The universe grows smaller every day, and the threat of aggression by any group, anywhere, can no longer be tolerated. There must be security for all, or no one is secure. Now, this does not mean giving up any freedom, except the freedom to act irresponsibly. Your ancestors knew this when they made laws to govern themselves and hired policemen to enforce them. We, of the other planets, have long accepted this principle.

We have an organization for the mutual protection of all planets and for the complete elimination of aggression. The test of any such higher authority is, of course, the police force that supports it. For our policemen, we created a race of robots. Their function is to patrol the planets in spaceships like this one and preserve the peace. In matters of aggression, we have given them absolute power over us. This power cannot be revoked. At the first sign of violence, they act automatically against the aggressor. The penalty for provoking their action is too terrible to risk.

The result is, we live in peace, without arms or armies, secure in the knowledge that we are free from aggression and war. Free to pursue more... profitable enterprises. Now, we do not pretend to have achieved perfection, but we do have a system, and it works. I came here to give you these facts. It is no concern of ours how you run your own planet, but if you threaten to extend your violence, this Earth of yours will be reduced to a burned-out cinder. Your choice is simple: join us and live in peace, or pursue your present course and face obliteration. We shall be waiting for your answer. The decision rests with you.”

MaxK - 08 Oct 2014 23:38 - 47109 of 81564

I'm surprised the lefty hippies haven't picked up on that one.

ExecLine - 08 Oct 2014 23:51 - 47110 of 81564

It may be that other dimensions co-exist inside/outside/alongside our own dimension and at the same time too.

It may be possible to "enjoy" a form of co-existence with alien life forces without actually being in their immediate presence.

The universe is around a stupendous 14bn years old. If we can prolong a human life for several thousand or even several million years so that a human can undergo extremely long distance space travel then an alien interaction might one day be possible.

When I was a kid some 60 years ago, my grandparents on my mother's side did not even have electricityin their home. My grandfather still used Shire horses to pull his carts and do his ploughing and harvesting and I have experienced doing just a little of this kind of thing as a lad myself.

Now, in 2014, my passengers can watch live images on my mobile phone in my motor car, (which is capable of easily doing over 150mph) whilst I can get live traffic reports on a screen on my dashboard.

I can also share a live Lewis Hamilton F1 driving experience (or even swap over to any of four or five other drivers) on just one chanel on my home TV.

What we can do using the Internet is truly amazing. Within just a few minutes any of us on here can find the answer to almost any kind of question, IYSWIM?

Who knows what we might be able to do in another 60 years time!

Haystack - 09 Oct 2014 00:01 - 47111 of 81564

None of the above breaches the laws of physics.
