Dubious sell-off

ellio - 15 May 2006 09:10

The market seems to be selling-off on the back of limited bad news imo, apart from the dollar that is.

If you can hold your nerve and apart from any short term requirements to offload poor performing stocks, I have a couple!!, my advice would be sit tight. This does not have the feel of the tech(mining!) bubble at all. Difference being there are a lot of good fundamentals, unlike in 2000 when there were a lot of over rated nothing companies.

The Dow was down true, but the far east was up so we will be as well.

But we should all remain EXTRA wary ..... this bounce was overdue ...... as i have said before shares and markets do not rise or fall in straight lines ...... a salutary article from Godman Sachs on the front page of Telegraph Biz is worth reading.

praise the lord :-)

the next line is " ..... and pass the ammunition"! ....... think comes from 1st World War .... who has Book of Quotations (Book of Revelations can go back on the shelf for a couple of days!)

Sold the open and out for a wee couple of pence. ;-))

Falcothou - 06 Mar 2007 08:25 - 485 of 1564

At least Yen has dropped overnight

Big Al - 06 Mar 2007 08:29 - 486 of 1564

Bummer

Strawbs - 06 Mar 2007 10:09 - 487 of 1564

Could be the "eye of the storm"...... I guess the next week or so will tell.

cynic - 06 Mar 2007 10:11 - 488 of 1564

for sure market is just holding its breath to see if Dow can hold any gain, which is something it has conspicuously failed to do of late ...... my guess is that it will (said that last night too and was wrong!), though i certainly do not think this is the end of the horrible times

Strawbs - 06 Mar 2007 10:27 - 489 of 1564

I suspect things will settle down for a few days now. The question is how stretched are the big leveraged players. If there's no sustained buying, it might be an indication of tight margins. You can't take 2.4 trillion out of these markets without somebody paying for it.

Be careful out there.....

read Telegraph ..... Golman Sachs reckon there is still quite a lot of carry trade to unwind and there will be casualties ..... we had all better pray that GS are wrong or that any casualties are realtively small players

Strawbs - 06 Mar 2007 11:06 - 491 of 1564

Read it this morning together with a number of other papers......(anyone interested can find it here)

Relatively small players would normally be the private investor. According to the IC last week, most of them have done a runner already, and my money's already on it's way to a higher rate bank account too......

cynic - 06 Mar 2007 11:10 - 492 of 1564

by relatively small players, i meant minor institutions which from memory is what GS implied too.

by the way, if UK puts up interest rates (likely within next few months) but US does not (also likely if they do not wish to precipitate recession), the $ will weaken and gold price will consequently benefit

Kivver - 06 Mar 2007 11:25 - 493 of 1564

not sold a bean only added, time will tell if it was the right thing to do!!!

cynic - 06 Mar 2007 11:42 - 494 of 1564

i sold a few things but am holding the balance ..... have had the odd quick dabble long/short in Dow and FTSE and yesterday went long gold (still holding)

hlyeo98 - 06 Mar 2007 12:16 - 495 of 1564

Cynic, do u think we are out of the storm yet? It really baffles me.

cynic - 06 Mar 2007 12:22 - 496 of 1564

categorically not!

HARRYCAT - 06 Mar 2007 13:14 - 497 of 1564

Some stocks now going in to negative territory after a good run this morning.
Presumably taking profit as uncertainty how the DOW will perform this afternoon.
Hopefully if it stays in the blue we could see another little rally this afternoon.
U.K. interest rates seem tipped to stay unchanged on thursday, so hopefully no worries there.

Strawbs - 06 Mar 2007 13:33 - 498 of 1564

Keep an eye on dollar/yen if you want a clue to market direction at the moment.....

In my opinion....

It's a day like this that I wish I had got into spreadbetting, but a good day for normal trading nevertheless.
If the Nikkei holds up overnight, hopefully we should see more gains tomorrow. Of course, I have been known to be wrong!
