Traders Thread - Monday 16th April (TRAD)

Greystone - 15 Apr 2007 12:09

Greystone - 15 Apr 2007 12:11 - 5 of 60

A Brief Look At The Week Ahead
At Tesco's annual results on Tuesday, stockbroker Charles Stanley expects CEO Sir Terry Leahy to unveil 2.48bn in pre-tax profits, up from 2.23bn the year before. The City will be eager to talk about is Tesco's expansion plans abroad, principally in China and the US. The retailer unveiled plans last year to open a chain of Tesco Express-style stores on the West Coast of America, wading into territory that has been a graveyard for most UK retailers that have tried to cross the Atlantic. But with Warren Buffett, the billionaire US investor, having bought a big chunk of shares last year, it will be hard to bet against the company. Rio Tinto will reveal its production numbers on Wednesday, which are expected to be strong. But there will be no forward-looking statements that could give a hint of its thinking. When Clinton Cards announces interim results on Thursday, it is hoped it will report good progress with the store-modernisation drive that ate into last year's earnings. CEO Don Lewin has said the greeting cards seller plans to sell up to 80 stores in the UK by mid-summer and purchase 15 new locations in an effort to improve the focus on its two main brands, Birthdays and Clinton's. Last year, the company reported its first annual loss in more than a decade. W H Smith hopes to deliver its own upbeat restructuring story with interim results on the same day. The company closed its final salary pension scheme last month in a move that it says will save 5m per year. With such moves, CEO Kate Swann has deftly managed to increase profits despite falling turnover. Investors are wondering if she will be able to pull off the same trick again. Amongst others in the spotlight this week will be Zirax on Monday; Pipex Communications and Debenhams on Tuesday and Signet on Thursday. Good hunting! Greystone Thanks, as always to Digger, Kyoto and Supermum for their invaluable input to the Traders Thread (Greystone is Alan English, City Editor at MoneyAM.)
