News Headlines:
US stocks suffered the worst decline in
almost two months as a dollar slide to fresh four-year lows against the euro
triggered a broad-based equity sell-off. This followed comments from
Treasury Secretary John Snow which seemed to support a weaker dollar. The
FTSE is called down slightly but there is a feel that the US may bounce back
today so look for the FTSE to go positive at
some time in early trading.Marks & Spencers:
Released better than expected results
with the pension deficit lower than expected. However costs had risen more
than expected. Profits for the year were 721.3 million pounds with analysts
expecting a range of 684-720 million pounds,
Granada: reports a 37 million pound loss
instead of an expected profit and <WARNS> that
advertising revenue is expected to fall in June.EMI: said due to cost cutting its
pre-tax profit was 18 percent higher but sales tumbled 11 percent due to a
slump in the music industry.
Profits were below expectations at 177.3 million pounds with predictions at
180 to 185.5 million.Capita: The Times newspaper said the outsourcing specialist has been
fined 2 million pounds for its part in the fiasco surrounding
Britain's Criminal Records BureauCanary Wharf: Brascan Canadian
investment company, refused to rule out the possibility that it may make an
offer for Canary Wharf Group Great Portland Estates: The Guardian
said the UK commercial property company could be a takeover target for
Britain's third largest property company Liberty International.
Dixons: Britain's competition watchdog set out proposals on Tuesday for a shake-up of the market for offering consumers extended warranties on household electrical goods. Glaxo suffered defeat on Monday as 50.72 percent of shareholders voted against a resolution awarding generous pay packages to executives.
