The Matrox Parhelia card that we use in our Trader PC's is very good but it is better if the screens are the same size & resolution ie 17" 1280 x 1024

Resisted the temptation myself.

I want to network my broadband connection from my PC in the dining room to a laptop in my son's bedroom.

1) should I cable it, distance about 20 metres, but it means trailing wires and holes in window sills.


2) should I use a wireless network, and what solution shall I use.

Go wireless, provided the laptop is running a recent OS (ie not NT). 54g wireless solutions are pretty cheap (though considerably more than 2 lan cards and a couple of bits of wire)

Cud someone kindly advice me on two matters pse.

1. When i boot my computer up it takes ages to boot up any reason why and how i can remedy the problem.. below is some info for the memory and space on my system.

2. the second problem is that is that i use the broadband.. what annys me is the number of pop-up appearing on my screen.. most of them me how much i got to pay in order to stop them etc.!! i have tried uninstalling the messenger but i don't how the option to uninstall this is not available in the normal uninstall programs place on the computer. sorry for the long email but any help advice vll b appreciated.

Widows xp takes much longer to boot, nature of the beast

Get a pop up stopper. Lots of free ones on the internet, however you will not be able to stop Flash pop ups, to to this you have to disable your flash plug in but you will have to reactivate it if you want to view flash sites. Pop ups a problem with a connection that is switched on permanetly.

Get some more memory it's cheap and easy to install just get a good brand e.g. Kingston.

The word Microsoft uses up 128MB on it's own.......

as for pop up's, a virus/security programm can put pay to (most of) them, such as Norton.

Yep, as Ricardo says you need 256kMB + for reasonable speed.

I agree, the more memory the better (at least 256 for XP Pro), especially as your processor is pretty slow by todays standard.
As for uninstalling the pop up messenger service, this is how to do it - as long as you understand that this will stop all pop ups that use the Messenger service (apparantly there are programs that use this for other reasons).

Start - Control Panel - Admin Tools - Services

From there, set the Messenger service to 'Disabled'. I have done this myself and it HAS stopped all my pop up messages from appearing.

Anti-virus question..... The free subscription to Norton Anti-virus that came with my new PC has expired. Before I renew is there any other virus protection I should look at. TIA, G.

Guitarist although it has expired it should work fine still? The only thing is it will no longer download new virus information. However it is still a very effective tool
