SUPERSCAPE - TECHNOLOGY FOR THE FUTURE. (SPS)

Happy1 - 03 Mar 2004 22:47

Superscape was founded nearly twenty years ago, and has been dedicated throughout its history to the development of ground-breaking software technology for the creation and delivery of innovative, high quality interactive 3D applications.
Over the years, Superscape has amassed unparalleled expertise and experience in the development of 3D software capable of working within the constraints of limited memory devices, slow processor speeds and strictly controlled file sizes.

Drawing on this knowledge, Superscape has established a world-leading position in the development of industry-standard 3D technology and applications for mobile devices. The company's Swerve technology has been developed specifically for wireless environments in close collaboration with ARM, and comprises a 3D engine (Swerve Client), authoring tools (Swerve Studio) and a broad portfolio of 3D content, with particular emphasis on 3D games. Swerve is being adopted on a global basis by many of the mobile industry's leading players, together with world-renowned content and brand organisations.

Superscape has corporate headquarters in Hook, Hampshire (UK) and San Clemente, California (USA) with regional offices in Tokyo and Sydney. The company is quoted on the London Stock Exchange (LSE: SPS).

Superscape (SPS) has received various tips in the press and by Analysts recently which will certainly give impetous to the share price. Indicators are looking good with the RSI rising off an oversold position and the MACD crossing showing BULLISH signs for the stock.

The mobile gaming market is still in it's infancy but the projected revenue is enormous. Mobile operators are looking at tapping the Gameboy market as they feel that users will not want to carry around a multitude of technology and if they have a mobile phone which can double as a gaming station than people will prefer this option.

People should also look at the recent contracts which SPS have signed for their technology. This is a technology company which could well be a great success in 2004.

Even American game publishers have finally discovered what their Japanese and European rivals realized years ago: mobile games are the fastest-growing segment of the game software industry. With The Economist projecting that 1/3 of all game software sold in 2006 will be on mobile phones, the traditional console game publishers can no longer afford to sit on the sidelines. This panel session includes representatives from some of the first companies to enter this field, as well as some console game companies who are new to mobile. What conditions must be satisified before a console game publisher enter the mobile market? Does mobile present a new opportunity or just a repeat of the online experiment? How appealing is the prospect of dealing with mobile operators? OTA or MMC? Brand extension or new titles? How tightly does the mobile audience mesh with the core game audience?

I don't think Swerve is the only 184 compliant engine on the market anymore. A number of competitors are starting to emerge (Criterion for one). Some will pose a real threat, others not so much so. What we don't know is how good they are on 'over the air download' which was always Superscape's strength.

I think all holders of SPS have to brace themselves for a spate of news in coming months, some seemingly very good, some seemingly very bad. The strategic partnerships are starting to unfold and Swerve is not going to win every deal by a long way. But remember, all we need is for SPS to win a decent slice of the market and we will be rewarded handsomely.

As an example of the possible strategic partnerships, we know that SPS is working closely with Vodafone and Orange. Vodafone and Orange are also funding Savaje who have licensed Swerve. Vodafone has signed a big content deal with Disney and SPS are also working with Disney. Vodafone has been very critical of Nokia and seems to be developing closer ties with Microsoft at the same time as SPS is invited into the M'soft inner circle. A seperate partnership also seems to be developing between Qualcomm/Brew and SPS. Qualcomm/Brew are also working closely with Verizon. Don't know where all this is leading but worth keeping an eye on the big picture!

It's going to be a white knuckle ride. Possibly more volatile than any of us can now envisage (depends on whether the good or the bad news comes first). Many will be shaken out on route. But hanging in there should be rewarding! Just a pity the company cannot give more frequent investor updates to smooth some of the uncertainties.

Forgive me if this has already been posted -if it hasn't it might interest you.

The financial news site Citywire today carries a fairly full Tip Update on Superscape .

The basic message is very positive and CEO K Roberts told Citywire that he did not believe the city fully understands the significance of some of the major IP licensing deals that Superscape has announced in the past few months .

House broker Evolution Beeson Gregory is looking for Revenues this year of 4.5 million and Roberts told Citywire he was comfortable with that.

The paragraph which caught my eye however was the following ..

" Roberts is as aware as anyone that the company's next challenge will be execution, but so far deals seem to be coming in from all directions, including network operators, handset manufacturers and the owners of the IP and by the end of this financial year it should be clear just how potentially lucrative these could be "

"Patient Superscape investors probably have another six months to wait before they see the first fruits of all the content deals signed recently, but management reckons the City still does not see the potential."

From The Independent, '3G mobile technology is starting to motor, so pace your bets' - Neil Thapar.

"After several false dawns, there are now firm signs that Superscape has turned the corner thanks to growing acceptance of its software for downloading computer games on handsets. Its Swerve technology enables graphics-rich data without using too much computer memory, making it ideal for mobiles.

The group has been backed by ARM, the world's largest chip designer of mobile devices, giving Superscape access to Nokia, Intel, Sony and Vodafone. The company says that handsets incorporating Swerve should start to hit the streets late this year and revenues from licensing deals should start to come through from the second half of this year.

As with Emblaze, estimating Superscape's profits are little more than a stab in the dark. But if both companies are able to establish their technology as an industry standard, the shares will motor. But only dabble with amounts you can afford to lose".

I read with interest the debate that ensued following my post last week with regard to the market for playing games on mobile phones and the desire to download games. Certainly both opinions should be respected because it seems to me that both sides of the argument contain an element of truth.

My reasoning for saying this is really born out of my own experience, which I would imagine would hold true for many millions of families around the world.

I belong to the generation that has embraced the technological age and am happy to carry a mobile phone, However, I really only use it to make telephone calls because I just cannot get my fingers working fast enough to make sending a text message a pleasure or my mind around what seems to be a requirement to learn a whole new language.

In addition, I am not a gamer and at the moment cannot see myself rushing to download games in the future. However, ultimately I will no doubt acquire a 3G phone, as they become standard issue and, therefore, will be tempted to try any embedded 3D games,

With this in mind, the CEO of Vodafone is unlikely to achieve his goal of increasing his ARPU significantly if he is relying on the likes of me although there is hope for him because I have a teenage daughter whose most prized possession is her mobile phone.

It certainly was a relief for me when I came across the Mix-It tariff from T-Mobile because despite endless attempts at reasoning with my daughter, I just could not get her to stop sending text messages and she would think nothing of spending 1.50 on downloading the latest ring tone even though I could see nothing wrong with the tone that came with her phone.

Prior to getting her phone, her most prized possession was a Game Boy and I have no doubt that she will jump at the chance of effectively acquiring a phone and Game Boy rolled into one. I can see that she will want to download new games that are even better than the ones she used to play on her Game Boy and you know, I might even be happy for her to do this if it reduces the number of her text messages because I am convinced that many are only sent out of a sense of boredom when, for example, she is travelling home on the bus.

The network operators may well see an element of shifting in revenues from text messaging to mobile gaming but overall their ARPUs are likely to increase and increase considerably if the size of the mobile gaming market does turn into that multi-billion dollar industry.

In my post at the beginning of the year I mentioned that I would not be surprised if Superscapes relationship with Vodafone ultimately proved to be as important as its relationship with ARM and since then we have heard about the link between Taito and Vodafone effectively opening up one route to market for Swerve content.

Even more encouragingly, this past week has seen the announcement of a deal between Vodafone and Disney, which, when considered in the light of Joanne Wallens Citywire article, seems to offer considerable promise.

The following extract from the article looks particularly significant:

The second source of revenue is Swerve Studio, a toolset that enables games developers to create these Java and Brew-compliant games. Superscape takes a 'success fee' from developers that use the tools. These can be large companies like Disney or Motorola, that want their own in-house developers to create the game rather than have Superscape do it for them.

Despite the announcements made to date, I have been a little disappointed that there has been no mention of licensing deals for Swerve Studio because this to me will really demonstrate that the Swerve technology has been embraced by the industry and will enable Superscape to address the mass market because given its size it cannot do it all on its own.

I am speculating here but, given that Joanne Wallens article is fundamentally a report on her interview with Kevin Roberts, to my mind the words these can be large companies like Disney or Motorola, that want their own in-house developers to create the game rather than have Superscape do it for them are actually code for Disney and Motorola have licensed Swerve Studio.

If this is correct and following the announcement involving Vodafone and Disney, it could just be that all those in-house Disney games supplied to Vodafone for global distribution will utilise Swerve Studio.

Little wonder then that the CEO feels the City has failed to appreciate the potential within the Company and that there is just a chance that we are on the verge of achieving something extra special, especially as according to Kevin Roberts.

Superscape is the only company with a library of games that complies to the recently approved Java games standard JSR 184, which has been adopted by many of the mobile industry's major players, including Nokia, Motorola, ARM, Vodafone, Siemens and Superscape.

The potential is indeed vast and at the end of this year we will be up and running. However, I think at this stage nobody really has a clue about where the new market will take us in 2005 and beyond with regard to revenue generation, which probably explains why we are long overdue an update from the Companys broker.

I have 2 questions.

1)Can anybody explain to me that with the recent agreements recently, why superscape have been on a downward curve over the last couple of weeks?

2)My understanding is that one of the main drivers of a share price is the future prospects of a company, again why the downward trend?

Regards

I think that a lot of investors are suffering from short termism. Citywire and a host of institutions have backed SPS, some to the extent that it will be the share of the year. The news flow has been excellent, the following was crucial: " a portfolio of games from the
Superscape Library of Games has been licensed by Siemens from Superscape." As one of the worlds largest phone manufacturers, this has to be viewed as a very big plus as it will guarantee revenues going forward. The main issue is the competition seen erroding into SPS's competitive position but with three of the worlds top five on board and Nokia yet to announce, i fail to understand the pessimism. this share is definitely not for short term trading but a long term hold should pay dividends. The board is open to criticism though as they have not purchased shares to support the company but get very substantial options. I think that this will win in the long run, a deal with Nokia would be the icing on the cake and as Nokia sponsored JSR 184, it would also not be surprising to see them license swerve. IMHO of course.

The trend is now very bearish even with excellent news... If you are still in profits I would sell and re enter when the trend reverses. If you are not (like me) just hang on, the fundamentals will win eventually. I think as a whole the markets are going thru a corrective time, the DOW and FTSE have to fall between 10% to 15% before the start going up again. The NASDAQ and FTSE Techmark have to go down further more than the fisrt two in the short term. maybe early summer we start to see the indices on a more positive outlook which will help SPS. thanks

Superscape Group plc (LSE: SPS) announces that the following statement

was released by Motorola at 9am EST today

MOTOROLA DELIVERS ENHANCED MOBILE ENTERTAINMENT EXPERIENCE TO DEVELOPERS AND
CONSUMERS

Suite of mobile devices feature advanced 3D and real-time gaming technologies
from Superscape and Terraplay Systems

Game Developers Conference, San Jose, CA - 25 March, 2004 - Today, from the Game
Developers Conference in San Jose, California, Motorola Inc. (NYSE:MOT),
showcases several "must have" mobile handsets and applications, designed to
maximize the mobile entertainment experience and increase development
opportunities worldwide.

Highlighting software solutions from Superscape and Terraplay Systems, devices
such as the new Motorola E680 and V600 will enable mobile games enthusiasts to
enjoy 3D features and real-time multiplayer games, while encouraging games
developers to innovate and sell solutions via Motorola's signature content

I really think this stock is set to rocket it's as if everyone is trying to wait for the lowest share price available before buying into it.Unless people are waiting for a set of results to have more proof it's a good share, as they are in a volatile market.

There is meant to be a set of results out next month but I haven't seen any dates yet.I'm glad I have already got into Superscape shares because I believe these could be the icing on the cake taking into account all the positive news of late.

Does anyone know of a results announcement date? All I received via an email, from the investor relations person was April, but no specific date.
