Leadcom taps Indian potential

Total Telecom

16 January 2007

Israeli systems integrator sees 3G launches in major LatAm capitals this year.
Low penetration of telephony services in India presents a valuable opportunity to all involved in the telecoms value chain, according to Israeli systems integrator Leadcom, which has recently established its presence in the country and announced a new contract win there.

"We see great potential in the Indian market," with operators looking to spend significant amounts to extend their networks, Leadcom CEO Arik Alcalay told Total Telecom this week. He noted that penetration stands at around 8% in India at present but, with new subscribers being added at a rate of 7 million per month, is expected to rise to 25% by 2010.

Earlier this month Leadcom announced a new $5 million deal with an Indian infrastructure management company that leases network to telecoms providers. The deal, which could increase in value up to $20 million over the course of 2007, will see Leadcom provide engineering and network deployment services.

Driven in no small part by the addition of India to its portfolio of largely emerging market operations, Leadcom expects to book revenues in excess of $180 million this year, up from a preliminary figure of $137 million-140 million for 2006.

"We have already secured more than $100 million" for this year, said Alcalay. "We also have an impressive pipeline of opportunities... in excess of $600 million," of which half are India-based. The company's hit-rate currently stands at around 35% of the pipeline, Alcalay explained, although he noted that as India is a new market this figure may not be an accurate guideline.

Alongside the India deal, Leadcom simultaneously announced two follow-up network expansion orders in Africa, valued at a total of $14.5 million. Both were deals to expand capacity and coverage of cellular network backbones in two major African markets.

Sub-Saharan Africa and Central and South America are key markets for Leadcom. It has recently established new subsidiaries in Venezuela and El Salvador, as a result of a greater need from vendor partners in those markets, said company CFO Eytan Mucznik.

"[In Latin America] the trend for the last three years was migration from TDMA to GSM," said Alcalay. "[Now] we're starting to hear about 3G." He predicts that by the end of 2007 3G services will have been launched in a number of capital cities in the region, noting that Chile is a particularly advanced market.

In fact, in Chile Leadcom is bidding "together with one of the vendors... for a country-wide WiMAX project," said Alcalay.

Leadcom has preferred partner status with Nortel, Nokia and Ericsson, but is in talks to extend this group. "[We are aiming to] expand to include Siemens, Alcatel and maybe Huawei," said Alcalay.

"Our sales tool is the fact that we are very much connected to the vendors," said Mucznik, adding that this is a strategy that is working well for Leadcom.

While India is at the forefront of Leadcom's plans for geographic expansion, it is also in talks to get into North America via a vendor partnership.

"We are looking into the U.S. market," said Alcalay, prompted by the fact that 3G rollout will be huge there over the next three years. However, "we have no intentions to look into other markets at the moment," he concluded.

Unterberg Towbin issues Buy for Leadcom

15.1.07 | 11:42 By TheMarker

CE Unterberg Towbin today issued a Buy rating for Leadcom Integrated Solutions, an Israeli company listed on London's AIM market, based basically on the company's strong business.

Analysts Rich Church and Gina Chen note that their impetus is the company's win of a contract in India, to build telecom sites, and also follow-on orders in Africa.

The first phase of the Indian contract is worth $5 million but it could end in $20 million revenues, mostly in 2007. Also, in December 2006, the company announced a unrelated $10 million contract in India, for execution this year.

In short, Unterberg sees joy for Leadcom in India.

Also, the African follow-on contracts total $14,5 million, all bookable this year.

The market has been noticing Leadcom's charms. The investment bank notes that it tapped Israeli institutional investors for NIS 125 million through a heavily oversubscribed offering of bonds, which won an A3 rating by Midroog. The offering brings Leadcom new resources to fuel its rapid growth, explain the analysts.

Risks for Leadcom include "customer concentration, competition, partnerships, currency risk for AIM-listed stocks and," as always, the possibility that its customers will scale back capex.
