THE TALK TO YOURSELF THREAD. (NOWT)

goldfinger - 09 Jun 2005 12:25

Thought Id start this one going because its rather dead on this board at the moment and I suppose all my usual muckers are either at the Stella tennis event watching Dim Tim (lose again) or at Henly Regatta eating cucumber sandwiches (they wish,...NOT).

Anyway please feel free to just talk to yourself blast away and let it go on any company or subject you wish. Just wish Id thought of this one before.

cheers GF.

The SNP's rise means Labour must look for seats in the south

The party must appeal to a broad coalition of classes and constituencies

Patrick Diamond

To have a hope of outright victory in 2015, Labour has to significantly improve its position in the southern and midlands’ marginals.

There is an even greater urgency today: after the Scottish referendum, Labour cannot rely on increasing its share of parliamentary seats in the so-called ‘northern and Celtic heartlands.’

The party has little room for manoeuvre: it urgently needs to lock in its support while enlarging its electoral base.

Manuel,

Do you mean because I am second born, that I shouldn't have competed with my brother.

Or none of my daughters should compete with one another. They are all about 50 and are in various ways still doing so.

You seem to be back in the Old Bible.

The brothers were brought up to compete and both accepted the result and got on with the result.

There may be a place of David back in full UK politics at a later date!

But is a diversion from the knife in the back of the factions within the "tory" party.

As Somerset faces new floods, we're set to pay £600m for Third World flood defences... Tory MPs' fury at new aid giveaway

David Cameron to offer more financial help to flood-prone countries

Water has already been seen rising again on the Somerset Levels

Area was submerged in water earlier this year after failure to dredge rivers

MPs said sending money abroad 'did not send out the right message'

By Jason Groves for the Daily Mail

Published: 22:03, 16 November 2014 | Updated: 08:59, 17 November 2014

Britain is to hand over an expected £600million more to fight global warming in the Third World including cash to build sea and flood defences.

Angry MPs said last night that voters would not understand why money is being sent overseas when not enough has been done to shore up flood defences here.

Earlier this year homes and fields in Somerset were flooded following the Environment Agency’s decision to stop dredging rivers. Days ago pictures emerged of water rising again on the Somerset Levels.

They should get on their bikes and move.

I don't see why individuals living of the plains of the Thames should had their welfare and comfort paid for out of my bloody taxes.

If they want to build houses there they should put in the drainage systems at the time of build and the individuals who bought older houses should have known about the problem and put aside capital for their bloody insurances and maintenance, rather than sponging of the bloody state.

Sanctioned jobseeker turns tables on Duncan Smith with viral blog – glynismillward18917/11/14

Peter Styles

Some readers may be wondering why Vox Political is drawing attention to an article that has received 8,000 hits when pieces on this blog regularly reach many, many more people. Peter Styles’s achievement is huge because his blog has come from nowhere to achieve that figure; VP had to work its way up over very many months. And it seems clear that he has used his skills to manage this feat – he’s a “communications and PR specialist”.
Here’s the story, reblogged from Morning Star and found on glynismillward189‘s blog:

Brighton man sanctioned despite applying for 67 jobs in a fortnight, writes Joe Gill

A Brighton jobseeker has turned the tables on Iain Duncan Smith’s punitive sanctions regime after his benefits were docked despite applying for 67 jobs in a fortnight.

Peter Styles has written a blog about his experience that has gone viral, reaching more than 8,000 hits yesterday after being launched on Tuesday.

The communications and PR specialist has been out of work and signing on for a year since his last employer ceased trading.

He says he has applied for “everything from copywriter position, to insight manager, probably seven or eight job titles I can do.”

Mr Styles told the Star: “The administrative officer said my job search was good – however it was not broad enough.

“They wanted me to apply to be an Asda grocery colleague and a personal shopper. I did that, neither of which even require a CV. They’re school leaver positions.”

Last month his local jobcentre moved him from fortnightly signing-on to the new daily signing-on system.

When he complained about the regime, created by Work and Pension Secretary Mr Duncan Smith under his work programme, he says he was segregated from other jobseekers and had his benefit sanctioned without appeal.

“I demanded a manager to come down but she was the woman who I’d been having massive problems with,” Mr Styles recalled.

“Throughout this time I was put in a segregated area because I expressed my views about the policy.”

Mr Styles has appealed against the decision and lodged an official complaint against two jobcentre staff with assistance from the Brighton Unemployed Workers’ Centre.

“I’ve been signed off with stress for a month due to the harassment I’ve been subjected to,” Mr Styles added. “The DWP indirectly are trying to destroy my mental health.”

A spokesman for civil servants’ union PCS said the daily signings were punitive.

“If you are hauling people in every day to sign on it reduces the amount of time they can go out and look for work,” he said.

“The sanctions regime is absolutely abhorrent and should be scrapped.

It is entirely counterproductive – it doesn’t get anyone back to work. It’s an absolutely pernicious system for both claimants and job centre staff.”

The Department for Work and Pensions had not replied to requests for comment at the time of going to press.

Mr Styles’ blog can be viewed at dwpvendetta.wordpress.com

Let us hope an employer offers Mr Styles a job soon. Otherwise – with his formidable skills – perhaps he could try making a living out of the social media.

or perhaps he just didn't fancy your mess of potage when there was wimpy and chips on offer

Fred should they get on their bikes and move to a third world country?! I don't mind paying my taxes to help people in this country, but I do object to all the money our government dishes out to other countries. There are appeals every ten minutes on telly by various charities like The Red Cross if people in this country want to contribute to overseas aid.

TANKER - 17 Nov 2014 13:10 - 50461 of 81564

make it a dam let it flood .should never have built on it .
if you live by a river they brag our nice it is . then when it floods the gov must act
no they do not putting up barriers is wrong it just moves the problem to some one else . stop spending tax payers money to protect homes that should be knocked down
nature is nature .

67 job applications in two weeks .. so theres plenty of vacancies out there.

What is his real problem?

doodlebug4 - 17 Nov 2014 13:15 - 50463 of 81564

TANKER, I don't live anywhere near a river or flood plain, but since my local council stopped unblocking the roadside drains I might as well live on, or near a river!

cynic - 17 Nov 2014 13:19 - 50464 of 81564

ah, but who gave planning permission to build on flood plain in the first place?
