Thought Id start this one going because its rather dead on this board at the moment and I suppose all my usual muckers are either at the Stella tennis event watching Dim Tim (lose again) or at Henly Regatta eating cucumber sandwiches (they wish,...NOT).
Anyway please feel free to just talk to yourself blast away and let it go on any company or subject you wish. Just wish Id thought of this one before.
cheers GF.

mansion tax
i don't think any party which is advocating this tax has actually set out exactly how it will be levied - always assuming it gets through parliament
some have implied that it will be a flat tax like stamp duty - totally iniquitous
others have guessed that it will be staggered like income tax - eg nil up to £2m and then Xp per £1 thereafter
that is at least a fairer application, though with a pretty arbitrary value set at the outset and all the exemptions that are bound to apply, the yield to the exchequer is likely to be very small
in other words, it will be no more than a "jealousy tax" and a sop to the left-wing of the labour party to "prove" that the so-called rich are being soaked

Just the sight of Geldof makes me want to throw up. How he can slag off Adele for staying at home and bringing up a family ------------- coming from a bloke who has been a disaster as a husband and father.
Good article by Bryony Gordon, says it all.

Labour has said that the mansion tax will be levied through the current property tax system. The drawback to this, is a costly revaluation process by the councils. Then there will be endless appeals. How long will it take to collect a single penny? Could it be two years or maybe three? Another policy that has not been thought through.

Geldof's business partner is venture capitalist Mark Florman, is a former deputy treasurer of the Tory Party. (not deputy chairman). Their business was worth £125m two and a half years ago.
Geldof is also registered as a non Dom, so doesn't pay income tax here.

so you think it's a sensible tax to charge £10k on someone's house that is (said to be) worth £2.1m and exactly the same £10k if the house is (said to be) worth £50m?
if so, your logic is what exactly?
or perhaps you'ld like to engage the brain and think again

mansion tax valuation
it's easy enough to value a house that is part of a terrace or even a modern housing estate or similar
however, the more valuable properties are much more difficult to value as they are likely to be stand-alone - no i do not just mean detached! - and are often only worth what someone will pay for them - ie any value set will almost certainly be pretty subjective and provable with any accuracy

it would be totally impossible to tax every single house in the country on an individual basis
it's bad enough at the moment where they are banded
the so-called valuations are fairly random too, but as the money raised is for local use it doesn't make so much difference
however, if it's to go to the exchequer, then true value - and how do you determine that? - is almost impossible to judge, especially on one-off houses

The Daily Mirror is looking more silly every day. They are now the only paper that supports Miliband. This morning even the Guardian was laughing at Miliband over his TV performance las night. The Daily Mirror, steadfastly supported Miliband despite public views to the contrary. The Mirror must take the prize as Comic Paper of the Year.
