Robb - Good luck - If none of the above work you could try a lightly tapping a corner of the disk on the edge of the desk. Sometimes the plates jam and don't spin up - this may free them. If, of course, you look at the electronic bits and see a hole burnt into an ic then none of the above will work ;-( In that case there are 'shops' that will recover most of your data (usually) but they're very expensive.

Noticed that my PC Plus magazine had a CD/DVD writing software free with it this month which includes a backup facility so might have a look at that. Will report back if it's any good.

For some reason my power lead has stopped powering my laptop. I have about 90 minutes remaining on battery. Is there anything I can do to keep the power going until I can get to shop tomorrow morning?

:-) Managed to get another cable to fit, hasn't got a box thingy in between but its working all the same.

Not really a PC question:

My 6 pack isn't working properly..... I have a 6 CD changer in my car. It's now quite old, and won't read the discs very well. Is there anything I can do or is it a specialist job?

Help please.
I want to put my Copy of XP pro on another system as well as this one. This will also be connected to the Net.
Ive been told that Microsoft can cut off another machine trying to access the net using the same serial code after thirty days, a feature unique to XP. A load of tosh or True?
I know I will not be able to download updates on the second machine but am perturbed if the above is true.
The things I do too save money!:-)

Iain - they could only block access to MS sites, there's no MS involvement in your PC accessing, say, AM via Pipex. There has been some talk about future updates disabling systems using security codes known to be shared, but the legal/practical difficulties make this course of action vanishingly unlikely.

Unfortunately MS *have* disabled updates on copies of XP that are known to be installed with shared serial numbers.

If it has been installed with some shared codes, then the service packs wont install (and trust me, you *want* the service packs!)

TullettJ - assume you can still apply updates if downloaded onto another PC? What I was suggesting won't happen is MS completely disabling the OS if an update finds it to be erm, unofficial.

Of course, using a key generator rather than an existing key avoids these issues altogether...
