Thanks Optimist,

I did get as far as getting the printer to do a test page from the laptop so my link may not be too wrong and the cable may not be the fault.

However, trying to print a page from Word totally failed.

I also got yellow exclamation marks against that connection and my WiFi connection in that panel at the bottom right of my screen.

And, my bigger worry, it was a struggle to get the laptop to turn off - which I was told is sometimes caused when it struggles to turn off network links that are not correct.

I'll get an adaptor and another standard cable anyway. They'll not cost much and surely come in handy sometime.

The cable is not your problem.

It sounds as though your network addresses are not set up properly. You either need to have a DHCP server on your network or set the network address manually on both the computer and the printer.

On your computer, go into the networksettings, select properties for the network connection then select TCP/IP and select properties. Set the network address to something like 192.168.0.5 the subset mask to 255.255.255.0 the other boxes do not need filling in for printing (you could use the alternate configuration settings if you sometimes plug your computer into another network).

On the printer, you have to set it to manual address, something like 192.168.0.6 subset mask to 255.255.255.0

That should do it.

Optimist,

Thanks for that.

I've found the bit in the manual about network settings. On the installation disk there is no mention of them.

Do you think I inadvertantly got a conflict last night with my WiFi - and hence the two exclamation marks ?

I am pretty sure (the machine is at home) that my TCP/IP is set to Automatically receive the IP address as that was what I was told to do when I set up the connection with the WiFi feed of my broadband.

I don't want to take too much of your time and I'm wondering if I should just go for the USB link and wait til I really need the internet link.

I assume that your broadband router is a DHCP server and normally sets both your WiFi and wired network settings. If you were to plug your printer into the router then you could also set it automatically from the DHCP server in your router, but only while everything is connected.

I can't see how the WiFi connection was effected (unless the printer also has WiFi).

If you want to plug your computer into your home network and use it away from home with the printer then connect to your broadband router and set the network properties on the computer to automatic. Open a command prompt window and type "ipconfig /all" followed by enter. This will list all or your current network settings. Open the router configuration and check the range of DHCP addresses (the last group of figures in the network address). Any manual settings need a unique address outside of this range and between 1 and 254 (avoid 1 - 3 as these are likely to be used by the router).

You should now be able to set the computer and printer up manually and everything should work together or stand alone. Of course it gets more complicated if you then want to connect to another network.

Thanks again Optimist,

I've printed out what you said and I'll use it as an aid memoire when I start tinkering this evening.

Bye for the moment.

Optimist,

I went down the USB route as I have not enough time to tinker deeper.

And USB is fine.

I do need a hub type situation in the future, but not until Mrs TP decides to become computerate. She has never even turned a computer on in her life, let alone owned one.

And before that she's got to find someone to teach her the basics - and, in the interests of married harmony that someone will not be me.

TGIF in a while.

Bye

Maybe she'll learn how not to double post.

I recieve the following daily emails: midday and close of market from MoneyAM (2) and a morning email from Sharecast.

All 3 suddenly stopped coming as from last Friday, I have checked my spam filter on my email account and all the right boxes are ticked as are the boxes with Money AM. Checked the spam box and the 3 emails don't appear there.

Anyone else had the same problems? or anyone know what Is causing the stopage please?

IanT(MoneyAM) - 15 Nov 2006 15:07 - 5195 of 11003

Stan,

You are set up to receive these E mail s from us - it could be that your ISP is marking them as spam - you may need to contact them to ask them to allow All mail from MoneyAM.

Ian

Stan - 15 Nov 2006 15:14 - 5196 of 11003

I'll give them a try, thanks Ian.

Stan - 15 Nov 2006 15:25 - 5197 of 11003

Ian,

My email A/C Is with Lycos, and ISP Is with the dreaded BT!

Is It possible that BT would suddenly do this, comunicating with BT In the past has usualy been a time wasting activity so want to avoid trying to contact them to be honest.

IanT(MoneyAM) - 15 Nov 2006 15:30 - 5198 of 11003

Stan,

I would start with Lycos, as they provide the E mail. Might also be worth looking at your internet security, to see if this is blocking them.

Ian

Thanks Ian, will do.

Just started to unsubscribe and subscribe, hope that has some effect.

Really have not got the energy just now to deal with this.

Ed:I can always read Greystones posts on here.

This e-mail arrived last week, maybe of interest to some. Ref Broadband + PC, 8 Mb broadband upgraded to 24Mb when available next year, also in the package a new PC value 500, a free 'Windows Vista' upgrade. At the end of the 36 month contract they give you another brand new upto date PC free! All for 20 a month Plus a one off payment of 50 for a modem. You will need a BT line.
Shame I just bought a new PC recently plus have 15 months to run with BT broadband. Seems like a good deal to me!

OK the web site >> http://www.redteninternet.com

ps - I have no connection with this company. DYOR!

Kayak - 16 Nov 2006 16:19 - 5202 of 11003

Interesting idea but a 3 year contract (on a cursory glance, I might be wrong). I would strongly discourage anyone from signing even a one year contract for broadband. The broadband market is moving very quickly and you certainly don't want to be stuck for three years with an ISP that isn't performing. Imagine trying to trade with your pages timing out and being unable to move ISP.

The '24Mb when available next year' is a bit of a red herring. Most BT exchanges will be upgraded starting next year (it could be 2-3 years before they all are) and no doubt all providers will offer 24Mb when available on your local exchange.

I've got a self-induced problem with the DVD drives on my PC that I wil be very grateful for help with.

I wanted to replace on of them with another drive. I disconnected both (for easier access) drive data & power cables, but them found that there isn't room to get the drive that I wanted to change out. I replaced the data & power cables for both drives, but they neither of them work - there appears to be no power supply to them - they drive doors will not open & they do not show up on the system.

When I've changed drives before I've alwasy been able to do a straight swap without any trouble.

Any help with where I've gone wrong will be greatly appreciated

thanks

Haystack - 29 Nov 2006 12:47 - 5204 of 11003

Have you pushed the power cable plug fully home? They are sometimes very difficult to get fully in. Do you have a voltage tester? The voltage on the plugs is very low. I think it is 3.5v in some cases. Another possibility is that there are often spare power feed plug inside the case for extra peripherals. Try connecting to another power cable plug. If they won't stretch then do it with the DVD external to the case just to test the door opening. Is there power going to any other part of the PC, such as other peripherals? There may be a fuse on the power supply itself. Fuse on the mains plug? Running out of ideas now.

ChuffChuffChaser - 29 Nov 2006 13:35 - 5205 of 11003

Thanks for your reply Haystack.

All other devices, extra & external (usb) hard drives are ok.
Everything on PC is OK except for the 2 DVD drives!!
No spare power cables unfortunately.
Have tried re-seating powers cables several times - no effect - will try again as they are a bit difficult to access because of their position.

Thanks again - greatly appreciated
