A new non-java Stockwatch is ready to try out - Technical Beta Test

IanT(MoneyAM) - 29 Jan 2014 07:42

As I'm sure you are aware, we and many of you have had a long and tiresome battle with Java when trying to use our streaming services. We have therefore been working on a solution to remove this problem.

We are pleased to announce that we have a new stockwatch available for use which no longer uses Java. We are currently making this available as a technical beta version, which means we are interested in your feedback regarding performance, bugs and browser/operating system/device compatibility issues (note: design and styling will be addressed in later beta releases).

For the purpose of allowing the old and new stockwatch versions to run concurrently, the technical functionality of the new stockwatch mimics the old one for now (not style, fonts or look). Editing and managing watchlists uses the same process as the current java stockwatch but is now at the top of the page. This will allow you to switch between the versions should you have any problems. All technical features of the current stockwatch are available in the new version except for the ability to drag resize columns. In the near future and as we migrate away from the java version of stockwatch, we will add new usability features as well as design it up to make the whole stockwatch experience smoother than it has ever been.

As this new version does not require java, you should expect it to work on your android devices and ipad/iphones. For now the display has not been optimised for smaller screens, but this will come in future development.

NOTE: Due to javascript performance in Internet Explorer 8, this new stockwatch can cause high CPU load. We recommend you use a current version of a modern browser such as Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox for best results.

The new version can be found on the following link:

http://www.moneyam.com/stockwatch/beta.php

NOTE: Non java versions of streaming trades, streaming news and level 2 will be released over the coming weeks.

Please do not worry about design/style at the moment as this version has not been styled it is purely a technical beta test environment it will be styled before it is released. We have put this here purely for feedback on its technical functionality i.e does it work in your browser and on your PC/Laptop/Tablet/Mobile

Please post your technical feedback in this discussion thread

Thank you for your feedback and we hope you enjoy it

George (ex MoneyAM) - 30 Jan 2014 14:24 - 54 of 734

personally, I also liked the vertical lines. I preferred the clear separation between columns

gdbarker - 30 Jan 2014 15:43 - 55 of 734

When I click on the N symbol the news no longer appears in a separate IE window -
I have to use Ctrl-Enter to achieve this.

Is the system working as intended?

nyleve - 30 Jan 2014 15:55 - 56 of 734

Well done Ian, can use on my iPad now!

George (ex MoneyAM) - 30 Jan 2014 15:57 - 57 of 734

gdbarker: No, we have noted that issue and it will be resolved.

gandalf34 - 30 Jan 2014 15:58 - 58 of 734

Very good, First Time been able to bring this up on my iPad .well done.

The non-Java Stockwatch is causing CPU usage to go way too high on my setup (IE8 and XP) especially with my longer watchlists. It probably doesn't help that I have multiple streaming pages open at once, but the new SW would be unusable for me as it is now.

Very pleased to get rid of Java, well done. Will it make my stocks go up?!!

George (ex MoneyAM) - 30 Jan 2014 16:11 - 61 of 734

dell314: Yes, we know. To be honest, we didn't expect to support IE8 at all but managed to make it work but it's slower and not good with large lists. IE8 is old tech and doesn't support html5 or javascript properly. In our opinion no version of IE is very good. XP is end of life now and will soon lack support from Microsoft. IE8 is only available on Windows XP, and therefore will also lose it's support.

I suggest upgrading to a modern browser such as Google Chrome or Firefox.

George - thanks. Do you expect the new stockwatch, and MoneyAm in general, to work better on Firefox or Chrome, or is there nothing between them?

mervpilot - 30 Jan 2014 16:18 - 63 of 734

A great advance as it's now working on an Apple iPad. In the past I had to rely on the heat maps.

I've no experience of the functionality, but the migration of the portfolio and switching between them works fine to my eyes.

Thanks for the development, and I also prefer the options at the top of the page.

George (ex MoneyAM) - 30 Jan 2014 16:23 - 64 of 734

dell314: We use both here and they are both very good but I think Chrome has the edge when it comes to heavy javascript.

I've been reading about the new stuff, and
pressed the relevant bit to access this, but nothing happens.
I tried it yesterday, nothing happened, the system froze and I had to
restart the PC. I thought I'd give it a day and tried again today
but the same thing happened again and I had to restart my PC,
so I am using Java for my Stockpage
and trades. Quite happy to keep pressing 'Run' in the meantime even though it is an irritation.
I am not a Level 2 subscriber. Does that have anything to do with
it? It seems everyone posting here is enthralled with
the new offering, so I am looking forward to seeing what it does.

Balerboy - 30 Jan 2014 16:24 - 66 of 734

Works great on firefox, any chance the colomn's could be adjustable to suit our width's of screen? Also putting the change of watch list and add/remove box at top is brilliant, saves scrolling all the way down to add a stock. Well done Ian.,.
edit, the orange highlighting line is a bit hard on the eyes a paler shade maybe better (maybe not orange) BB

midknight - 30 Jan 2014 16:26 - 67 of 734

Forgot to say I have IE 8.

greekman - 30 Jan 2014 16:32 - 68 of 734

Midknight,

I am also not a subscriber and the new system works fine for me.

Balerboy - 30 Jan 2014 16:33 - 69 of 734

George (ex MoneyAM) - 30 Jan 2014 16:33 - 70 of 734

Midnight: please see my response to dell (#61)

George (ex MoneyAM) - 30 Jan 2014 16:38 - 71 of 734

Balerboy: We will shorten the width of the Name column at some point but there is no point in making other columns adjustable as they are a minimum width to show the correct value. There is no point in them being wider or narrower. Advice for now is to move the Name column to the far right using the Edit Watch List function.
