How to profit from Betting Exchanges (BEX)

How would you like to trade a market where you get large regular price swings every 10 minutes in the afternoon, seven days a week. A
market where all prices are set purely by supply and demand, few transaction costs, no middle men and you only pay commission if you win? Where you can freely act as a market maker and where you have direct market access and where you can create a spread for others to take?

Betfair has revolutionised the betting market and created an open platform for exchanging risk on sports events. This market is now viewed much more like a traditional financial risk market than an old fashioned betting market. Smart users have realised that there are huge opportunities on Betfair because they can buy and sell risk in much the same way they would in a normal financial market but without the burden of cost or the restricted access that is usually associated with traditional financial markets.

you had a look at tonights footie - looks tricky though a few of the away teams appear reasonable value (Juventus, Werder Bremen)

An interesting article on Barney Curley not managing to fully get on his gamble!!

Curley storms out of Galway after barney with a bookie

by Pat Keane, Galway
BARNEY CURLEY, a man who is never far from controversy, lashed out at the Sean Graham bookmaking firm in Galway yesterday , after his Magic Combination had won the Smithwicks Handicap. Magic Combination was backed from 11 4 to 15 8, much shorter in places, right at the death and he landed the gamble without coming off the bridle, in the hands of Jamie Spencer. Afterwards, Curley made a claim, not denied by the bookmakers, that one of the people operating for him had asked Grahams for 9 4 to 20,000. The Grahams refused the bet, offering just 1,000 at starting price.Curley said: This is my last day having anything to do with Irish racing. I will not be back with horses, unless things change dramatically. To ask for a bet of 20,000 at 9 4 and be offered 1,000 at SP is daylight robbery. These are people who are offering early morning prices, they wouldnt lay two bananas to a banana.I hope Irish racing isnt going the same way as English racing. What you need in this country is a ring inspector. This is supposed to be a big betting meeting. The bookmakers held 1.7m here yesterday, this is ridiculous.I do not talk to the English press, I despise them. I hope you people arent in anybodys pockets.I am packing up now and going home. I was going to run Mystic Ridge at Roscommon next Tuesday. Can you imagine what it will be like in Roscommon? Kiss me ass they (the bookmakers) will tell me.Despite Curleys ferocious outburst, there is little doubt he left Galway a far richer man than when he came in the gate earlier in the day. The estimates last night were that he took at least 100,000 out of the ring.Brian Graham, however, mounted a staunch defence of his firms behaviour. He said: I have two things to say. I was asked for that particular bet by a fellow bookmaker. He would not lay me that sort of bet and, as far as I am concerned, he wasnt entitled to ask me to lay 45,000 to 20,000.Secondly, Barney Curley has the choice to pick and choose when he wants to back Magic Combination. But I can pick and choose when I want to lay it.The last three times that horse has run on the flat in England, there wasnt a tenner for it. He must think I am stupid.

Steve, would be careful with Werder Bremen, they struggled in a recent game in Cyprus, winning only 1-0 at the death with a penalty. FWIW

I though the horses were hard today. Maybe I was just having an off day?

Going to have a look at the footy in a minute.

Managed to turn a profit on the nags today, although far from satisfactory. After getting caught out by Fulham last night and Charlton's early second half equaliser, think I might wait and see how the games go before wading in.

Arsenal started brightly but now Reyes looks injured - taken 3 heavy fouls in first 10 mins - will we see Henry earlier than expected?

Currently no position on any games, Barca and Bayern looked to have started well but no goals in any of the 8 games yet

Fundamentalist - 18 Oct 2005 20:00 - 5222 of 10502

Great to see Henry back - hope he is fit and ready to return

Harlosh - 18 Oct 2005 20:02 - 5223 of 10502

Not certain who does and doesn't need to win so reluctant at the moment to go in heavy.

Will have to do my sums.

Fundamentalist - 18 Oct 2005 20:04 - 5224 of 10502

On the basis of only 2 games played so far everyone needs to win, though i agree some more than others

have united started as poorly as the drift in their price implies?

Welcome back Thierry !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fundamentalist - 18 Oct 2005 20:16 - 5226 of 10502

After 30 mins only 1 goal in 8 games - the under 2.5 backers will be happy

Bayern 1-0 vs Juve - keepers had a shocker

Fundamentalist - 18 Oct 2005 20:23 - 5228 of 10502

Bayern 2-0 up - glad i left Juve alone!!!

ptholden - 18 Oct 2005 20:39 - 5229 of 10502

trying a differnt stratgegy this evening, so laid Juve at the start, rather than lumping in on the teams I 'think' will win. Green on the bayern match now and will look for further trading opportunities during the second half of this one and the others.

Fundamentalist - 18 Oct 2005 20:42 - 5230 of 10502

Stand out value out half time appears to be Barca - sure to get a rocket at half time and now trading at 2.16. Tempted to have a few quid on Lille at 10.0. If cant find any value will look to scalp the Arsenal game

Anyone else trading?

Fundamentalist - 18 Oct 2005 20:43 - 5231 of 10502

PTH

well done on the Juve game - did you lay Juve expecting Munich to win or because you thought it would be tight and likely to stay 0-0 for a while - interested to know your reasoning as Juve looked good value to me but WFDIK

ptholden - 18 Oct 2005 20:58 - 5232 of 10502

Steve

Didnt expect Juve to win, so went with the draw or Bayern win. Must say I didn't expect Bayern to score twice so quickly, but hey, who cares? (Juve, i suppose!)

Looking to scalp for the rest of the evening on Arsenal and bayern and anyone alse who manages to score a goal.

Agree Barca look good value, but.......

Harlosh - 18 Oct 2005 21:04 - 5233 of 10502
