How to profit from Betting Exchanges (BEX)

How would you like to trade a market where you get large regular price swings every 10 minutes in the afternoon, seven days a week. A
market where all prices are set purely by supply and demand, few transaction costs, no middle men and you only pay commission if you win? Where you can freely act as a market maker and where you have direct market access and where you can create a spread for others to take?

Betfair has revolutionised the betting market and created an open platform for exchanging risk on sports events. This market is now viewed much more like a traditional financial risk market than an old fashioned betting market. Smart users have realised that there are huge opportunities on Betfair because they can buy and sell risk in much the same way they would in a normal financial market but without the burden of cost or the restricted access that is usually associated with traditional financial markets.

WOODIE - 21 Oct 2005 22:09 - 5258 of 10502

do other exchange sites have these problems that betfair have had ?

Scripophilist - 21 Oct 2005 22:48 - 5259 of 10502

Here is the explanation.

" We have now identified and resolved the cause of this afternoons problems. You will probably be aware that each bet request that is generated receives a unique sequenced number. Today the bet sequence exceeded 2,147,483,647 and our applications were unable to recognise the next sequence of numbers. This meant that bets placed could not display on the web-site i.e. within the bet manager. Amendments to our code have been made which will enable a vastly increased numerical sequence, and this is a problem which will not re-occur in the future.

Given the problems earlier today, we fully understand that some people may have legitimate cause for compensation (for example, due to a duplicate bet placement when a technical error message was received following a first bet request). We will undertake to investigate any such claims, and deal with each one individually based on its own merits.

In order to undertake such individual investigation, immediate resolution is unlikely, but we will do everything possible to provide a full
response to each claim within 72 hours. Any claims in connection with this afternoons problems should be directed by email only to: bets@betfair.com. Please ensure that the account username is quoted within the email. "

So which tech wiz decided that 2,147,483,647 should be the last recognisable number ???

What so special about that no. ?

DocProc - 22 Oct 2005 08:26 - 5261 of 10502

Any fool knows that. It is the largest 32 bit integer. :-)

hehehe

Anyone risking trading the footie today? Im going to wait until just after kick off to enter any trades dependent if i am comfortable that the site is ok.

Had a quick look at the in play games:

Arsenal look a big price at 1.58 against Man City at highbury. Yes Arsenal had an away game in Europe but their record against City in the last 12 games (home and away) is 11 wins and 1 draw - i think 1975 was the last time city won in the league against them - also Henry likely to start alongside Bergkamp upfront - backing Arsenal

Man Utd at 1.71 at home is a big price especially with Rooney back, however they are desperately short in midfield and as much as hate to admit it Davids and Carrick could well control this area - will wait to see how the match unfolds

Blackburn look a fair price at 2.2 against a poor Birmingham but this could well be 0-0 for a long time imo. If an early goal i may then get involved

Tempted to lay Liverpool away to Fulham but 2.26 is a bit big for me to be interested

Any other thoughts???

WOODIE - 22 Oct 2005 14:23 - 5263 of 10502

fundy agree arsenal the best bet of the day
