BSkyB boxing clever as subscribers soar
JESSICA HODGSON
SATELLITE television operator BSkyB is due to report a surge in new subscribers this week, giving a major fillip to chief executive James Murdochs controversial sales strategy.
Media analysts expect BSkyB to report on average 150,000 new subscribers when it updates the market on second-quarter trading on Wednesday.
But sources close to the company say the Citys expectations are "conservative", and the true figure is actually likely to top 160,000.
New subscriber additions - a key indicator of growth for the company - are expected to come in lower than the 193,000 it added last year.
But the figures are the first significant boost since Murdoch revealed last year that he intended to push sales at the expense of profit margins, and will steady anxieties among some investors that the Sky success story was slowing.
BSkyB is also expected to update analysts on sales of products such as its Sky+ personal video recorder, designed to differentiate Sky from the increasingly popular, lower-cost Freeview digital TV service. Citigroup is predicting that there will be an additional 108,000 subscribers taking the Sky+ service.
Some investors have been alarmed by rumours that the company plans to subsidise the giveaway of Sky+ boxes, in a similar way to BSkyBs mass subsidy of the transition from analogue to digital satellite.
But sources have played down the threat of any such move in the short term.
Sky had a total of 7.4 million subscribers the last time it updated the market, but Freeview now has five million subscribers after adding 1.5 million sales over the Christmas trading period.
BSkyB is also expected to confirm plans to develop a Nectar-style loyalty card for its subscribers, in conjunction with a major bank and possibly some key retailers. The card will take advantage of a second slot in Sky boxes, which will be activated shortly.
Analysts are predicting first-half pre-tax profits in a range from 329m to 332m on revenues of 1.44bn to 1.9m.

I noticed that the 2 purchases of IDD today made by me and also by my busisness partner topping up our holdings -- both showed on streaming as sales instead of purchases! so how many real sales were there today!?!?! Is someone somewhere messing with the price?

It looks about even as far as buys/sells are concerned today, its just the way the trades are interpreted by the computer.

The buys today (11/02/05)are at last a little more substantial (including one for 1 million). And the buying pattern has become more encouraging. Here are the total buys for the last seven days:
03/02/05 0
04/02/05 0
07/02/05 0
08/02/05 20,594
09/02/05 50,000
10/02/05 951,737
11/02/05 2,037,081
On the other hand the sells for the same period total 7,669,543 (according to my quick calculation) so it may be too early too read anything into this.
Any comments?

Hi everyone. This ones been falling for a long time now, and you'll have to excuse me because im not very well-researched on this one, but this looks oversold to me. If 11 million turnover is correct on a market cap of around 6 million, with a loss of 2 million, seems like there's plenty of room for a turnaround and a big jump in the SP on any positive news flow.
Any thoughts?
