How to profit from Betting Exchanges (BEX)

How would you like to trade a market where you get large regular price swings every 10 minutes in the afternoon, seven days a week. A
market where all prices are set purely by supply and demand, few transaction costs, no middle men and you only pay commission if you win? Where you can freely act as a market maker and where you have direct market access and where you can create a spread for others to take?

Betfair has revolutionised the betting market and created an open platform for exchanging risk on sports events. This market is now viewed much more like a traditional financial risk market than an old fashioned betting market. Smart users have realised that there are huge opportunities on Betfair because they can buy and sell risk in much the same way they would in a normal financial market but without the burden of cost or the restricted access that is usually associated with traditional financial markets.

Hmm, Looking at the match. Liverpool have come into 1.26!!!

I thought they were a little skinny before, Now very very skinny.

Watford will set up shop at the back and hope to catch Liverpool on the break. Because its over two legs I suspect Watford will try and disrupt Liverpool and kick them about a bit to try and return to Vicarage road with a chance of turning them over. Will watch with interest.

Harlosh - 11 Jan 2005 19:53 - 545 of 10502

Yep, Wait and see for me too Scrip

Harlosh - 11 Jan 2005 20:25 - 546 of 10502

Liverpool looking 'punchless' according to Alan Green 5 Live

Piptrader - 11 Jan 2005 20:27 - 547 of 10502

Hmm, I backed them at 1.28 over an hour ago, and the odds are steadily lengthening.

But I'm sure they'll score a goal soon!!

Harlosh - 11 Jan 2005 20:30 - 548 of 10502

Second half I think Pip.

Harlosh - 11 Jan 2005 20:33 - 549 of 10502

Might have a small wager on Watford at these odds the way the match is going

Piptrader - 11 Jan 2005 20:46 - 550 of 10502

I've been wondering about that as well. Then remembered the Newcastle/Yeading (who??) match the other day, which came out right once the teams had changed ends and Newcastle had the benefit of a following wind! (That was my theory, anyway.)

Harlosh - 11 Jan 2005 21:16 - 551 of 10502

Backed Liverpool 2 mins ago at 1.63 Yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyesssssssssss

Piptrader - 11 Jan 2005 21:24 - 552 of 10502

Excellent timing! Never doubted the outcome, of course!! Although greened up just in case.

Scripophilist - 11 Jan 2005 21:49 - 553 of 10502

Probably worth using some "spare" money to back Watford or the draw. You never know. Quite big odds available and Watford aint playing bad.

Scripophilist - 11 Jan 2005 21:53 - 554 of 10502

I think Watford will get to the final!!

Harlosh - 11 Jan 2005 22:00 - 555 of 10502

They are obviously determined Scrip. Won't be putting any money on Liverpool away that's for sure.

Hi, Good Morning,

I read several times the expression 'Greened up'. Can anyone please explain what it means.

Many thanks

Diego

DocProc - 12 Jan 2005 09:07 - 557 of 10502

I have copied the image from Scrip's initial posting at he top of the thread:-

040908%20-%20Poland%20vs%20England%20-%2

Putting it in very simple terms...

As the odds have changed over a period of time, Scrip has managed to place various bets on this Poland v England football match to the extent that, no matter what the outcome of the match, be it win, lose or draw, he is going to win around 570 or so.

ie. As indicated by the amounts in Green. Hence the expression, he is 'greened up'.

Thanks Doc.

Yep, It's basically about equalising your risk across several outcomes. You obviously need to make a profit first to be able to do it. Also there are only certain times you should do it or not, else you muck up your expectancy.

Diego - 12 Jan 2005 09:52 - 560 of 10502

Scrip,
I expect I shall learn all that on your course. I'm really looking forward.

Diego

Scripophilist - 12 Jan 2005 16:09 - 563 of 10502

Packed up for the day now. Not on the final two races on Wolverhampton. A clean sweep today, no losing positions. I learnt from my experiance yesterday when posting how well it had gone only to muck up the next event!! Nothing like fate to smack you in the chops!
