C&W Deal Likely To Kickstart Consolidation

Tuesday, August 16, 2005 8:22:47 AM ET
Dow Jones Newswires

1204 GMT [Dow Jones]--C&W (CWP) buys Energis (EGS.YY) for an initial cash consideration of GBP594M. Analyst says deal creates a stronger number 2 in the UK, which isn't great news for BT (BT) and also widens the gap between the top two and the smaller altnets. Says it is likely to force further UK consolidation of the likes of Thus (THUS.LN), Kingston (KCOM.LN), Fibernet (FIB.LN), Easynet (ESY.LN), Colt (COLT) and others. But it is unlikely to push valuations up as these deals will be done with survival in mind. Even private equity money has shied away from most small UK altnets so far. C&W -4.9% at 155p. (NPF)

Key is the comment on valuation - rationalistaion will be done to create long term viability not value. I see only little upside in speculating in the others right now, ESY included. Fraught with more risks than upside for me.

proptrade - 17 Aug 2005 14:10 - 558 of 602

fair enough but broadband battle is just in mid flow and the real fight will be over customers and price. ESY's deliverable is ALREADY developed whereas C&W and BT are now investing in the same systems. recent wins by ESY could see them snapped up by a european or even US suitor.

i remain bullish and hand on to a 150p target in the near term

proptrade - 18 Aug 2005 09:12 - 561 of 602

ticking up a bit more...finally may look like it will get back to 100p and then i can see 150p...it is a unique target for any european/US suitor and a great opportunity to get a couple of feet into the UK broadband arena. bid likely imo as well...

gavdfc - 18 Aug 2005 12:03 - 562 of 602

Some decent sized trades going through this morning at 95.5.

proptrade - 18 Aug 2005 14:19 - 563 of 602

very nice size, and VW as well so likely follow through buys from yesterday (order maybe shown around which is why they spiked).

expected ABN to come off the 95 bid and they have to join the pack closer to 92.

gavdfc - 18 Aug 2005 14:28 - 564 of 602

Well if they are buys from yesterday it would explain the rise after 16.00hrs yesterday before the close. Chart looking a bit healthier from June to now, possible golden cross coming up soon?

proptrade - 18 Aug 2005 16:13 - 565 of 602

thats why i see a 100p+ price v soon...

gavdfc - 18 Aug 2005 16:30 - 566 of 602

Looking at the chart, if it breaks above here then a good chance of a run back up to the 115ish mark perhaps.

BT suspends business broadband rollout

High prices are blamed for low SDSL take-up, as BT puts exchange upgrades on ice until price cuts kick in

BT has stopped rolling out its business broadband service until at least early 2006, citing lack of demand caused by high prices.

A BT spokeswoman confirmed on Friday that it has stopped upgrading local exchanges to offer SDSL, which is more suitable for small businesses and branch offices than ADSL. "It is because of a lack of take-up," explained the BT spokeswoman. "The feedback from our service providers is that the reason is basically the cost of SDSL."

BT had set itself the target of offering SDSL from 800 local telephone exchanges, mostly in metropolitan and other urban areas. At present, it has upgraded 729 exchanges.

BT hopes that its recent decision to cut wholesale SDSL prices by up to 30 percent will kickstart the SDSL market. If so, these remaining exchanges could then be upgraded.

SDSL, or symmetric DSL, provides a two-way high-speed Internet connection. This makes it more suitable for organisations who want to upload large amounts of data, perhaps because they host Web sites or run an email server used by remote workers.

BT has repeatedly sung SDSL's praises. Earlier this month, the telco said that "symmetric broadband is ideal for business use as it supports applications that require the same upstream and downstream speeds. This allows businesses to benefit from applications such as video conferencing and realise greater efficiencies through fast file transfer."

Some rival telcos, such as Easynet, offer their own SDSL services in competition with BT. But many of those businesses who can't get BT's SDSL service may have to make do with ADSL instead.

"There are other parts of our portfolio which should meet people's needs," said the BT spokeswoman.

Back in 2003, before it officially launched SDSL, BT had admitted that many firms were happy with ADSL, which is now available to over 99 percent of homes and businesses.

UK Online unveils 24 meg service

UK Online - the ISP that's part of local loop unbundling (LLU) outfit EasyNet - has confirmed it too is to offer 24 meg broadband.

The ISP launched an 8 meg service ten months ago and is now planning to build on that with the release of a 24 meg product from next month.

Although prices have yet to be confirmed the company said the service would cost under 30 a month.

In a statement Chris Stening, top dog at UK Online, said: "We've been pushing the current ADSL technology to its limits with 8Mb broadband since late last year."

Today's anouncement follows hard on the heals of rival ISP "Be", which revealed yesterday that it is planning a pilot of its 24 meg service in the London area.

Bulldog - another LLU operator which has been in the news recently for all the wrong reasons - is also telling its customers that it is planning to release a 20 meg service sometime soon.
