I'm glad that you are sorted out. As Kayak says, you should not worry too much about fragmentaton so long as yo have diskeeper to keep an eye on it, which it does very effectively.

As regards hiberfil.sys, if you nhave enabled hibernation, that file is only read when you restart from hibernateion, so if you enable it then fragmentation will only add a few seconds to the computer restart.

Thanks Optimist.

I guess I'm allergic to all that red - after years of using the inbuilt MS defrag software.

Yes, I do use hibernation quite a lot. But at least I now know how easy it is to clean it up.

Thanks again, chums.

Have a good (short) week.

I'm not impressed with the Shuffle mode in my Windows Media Player.

I picked half a dozen tracks from half a dozen albums for my playlist last night and the Player was in Shuffle mode.

I put them in the playlist by using cut and paste, so each album was in a group in the list.

I seemed to get about three tracks from one album followed by three tracks from another. The Shuffle on the CD player in my car is much more random in its selection.

Am I missing something about the way the MS Player works?

Has anyone come across another Player that is an improvement?

Hi guys

have bought an MP3 player and connected it via USB to the laptop. However, i dont get the "Add New Hardware Wizard" up to enable me to install the drivers. Is there a way to force up the wizard and/or install the drivers manually (and if so where do i put them?)

many thanks in advance

ThePublisher - 11 Apr 2007 16:08 - 5646 of 11003

Fundy,

The last person you need help from is me, the master of the rubbish shuffle.

But have you tried that Control Panel Install new hardware jobbie.

And don't people tell us to disconnect USB devices in the Systems panel with Yellow Exclamation Marks?

Now, enter the experts..............

I have Tp but didnt work, am trying to download the drivers from the website, hopefully that will solve it

Haystack - 11 Apr 2007 16:47 - 5648 of 11003

If you have Windows XP and the mp3 is a normal USB device then you don't need to install drivers. Go to the file manager (windows key +E) and you should see it as a storage device maybe E:, F: or G: depending on the number of disks and CD/DVD drives that you have.

jeffmack - 11 Apr 2007 17:54 - 5649 of 11003

Dont you usually install the drivers/software first then the device finds them

Seymour Clearly - 11 Apr 2007 17:55 - 5650 of 11003

Agree with Haystack, all you probably need to do is transfer the files with a drag and drop.

My shuffle conundrum.

In fact there are dozens of similar media players around. Here is one source:-
http://www.softpedia.com/catList/60,0,1,0,1.html

However, I found that with Win Media Player ver 11 there is a drop down box above the play list that invokes a shuffle. And you can keep repeating it until you see the mix you want. Then you start the top file playing and let it work down the list with the normal 'shuffle' turned off.

Seems to work fine that way.

Ran a playlist to our HiFi with my little FM transmitter last night. A great source of entertainment.

Can some kind soul let me know which Sun java to download as all our work PCs need it so I can run MAM at my desk :-)

Haystack - 13 Apr 2007 20:01 - 5653 of 11003

If you go to http://www.moneyam.com/stockwatch/ then you will see this

"You must have Java installed in order to view this page correctly."

Just click on the word 'Java' and it will take you to the Sun Java download page.

Thanks Haystack, why didn't I spot that? - because that's the page I'm wanting to view.

TP,

Have you tried using iTunes for your playlists? If not, you can download it for free from the Apple website.

Mega Bucks - 14 Apr 2007 12:10 - 5656 of 11003

SC you should have gone to Specsavers :-))

Seymour Clearly - 14 Apr 2007 12:17 - 5657 of 11003

Wash your mouth out with soap. Grrrr

:-)

ThePublisher - 14 Apr 2007 13:40 - 5658 of 11003

Hilary,

iTunes. Not properly.

I think I looked at it with my office machine and got a feeling that it also loaded some junk.

Presumably iTunes will still handle MP3 files?

ThePublisher - 14 Apr 2007 13:41 - 5659 of 11003

Specsavers for my PC as well please.

ThePublisher - 14 Apr 2007 13:41 - 5660 of 11003

Sorry folks.

hilary - 14 Apr 2007 17:15 - 5661 of 11003

TP,

I can't recall iTunes loading any junk.

And yes it handles MP3 files. You just drag them into your playlist, although they stay in their original location and iTunes merely links to them.
