Officials: Israeli PM Ready to Negotiate Borders
Israeli officials say Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has agreed to negotiate the borders of a future Palestinian state using the 1967 cease-fire line that delineates the West Bank as a starting point for talks.

Sources in the prime minister's office revealed the dramatic policy shift to Israeli media outlets late Monday. They said that in order to restart direct peace negotiations with the Palestinians, Mr. Netanyahu would be willing to discuss a proposal containing a formula on borders "that would be difficult for Israel to accept."

Officials said Mr. Netanyahu made clear that Israel will not return to the borders it had before the 1967 Six-Day War. They said demographic changes that have taken place since then - the expansion of Jewish settlements in the West Bank - must be taken into account.

The officials also said that in exchange for the concession, Palestinians must recognize Israel as a Jewish state and retract a unilateral application for statehood likely to be submitted to the United Nations next month.

Palestinian officials said they have not received such a proposal from Israel.

Earlier this year, U.S. President Barack Obama proposed negotiations based on the pre-1967 borders plus agreed swaps of territory between Israel and a Palestinian state.

Western-sponsored peace negotiations broke off just weeks after intensive efforts to renew them last September, in a dispute over Jewish settlement building in the West Bank.

Palestinians have demanded that Israel stop all settlement construction before peace talks resume. Mr. Netanyahu wants negotiations with no preconditions in which issues like borders and settlements would be discussed.

Most of the world considers the 1967 line to be a legitimate frontier, while Israel has always insisted it is just a temporary truce line that does not dictate the location of the border.

Earlier Monday, Israeli troops killed two Palestinian men during clashes at a refugee camp in the West Bank. Israeli officials said the soldiers shot the men at the Qalandiya camp after clashes that included young men throwing stones at the troops.

Egypt will withdraw its ambassador to Israel until it receives an apology and the results of an official investigation into the killing of five Egyptian policemen near the border, the cabinet said Saturday.

An emergency committee said the ambassador would be recalled until "Israeli authorities apologize for the hasty and regrettable statements about Egypt."

It said Egypt also held Israel responsible for political and legal implications of the incident, which it called a violation of the Camp David Treaty.

Egypt will also take protective measures and strengthen security at the border with the necessary forces capable of deterring alleged infiltrators as well as respond to any activity by the Israeli military, it added.

On Friday, the government protested to Israel over the killing of five policemen on the border and demanded an "urgent investigation into the causes and circumstances of the incident.

The policemen were patrolling in the Egyptian region of Sinai when they came under fire from across the border, sources at the interior ministry said.

Hundreds of Egyptians protested outside the Israeli embassy in Cairo on Friday demanding the expulsion of the ambassador.

Ousted president Hosni Mubarak was viewed by many Egyptians as taking a lenient stance toward Israel.

Tensions have mounted along the borders with Israel and the Gaza Strip after deadly attacks in southern Israel on Thursday.

Egypt to withdraw Israel envoy over Sinai shootings

Egypt says it will withdraw its ambassador to Israel in protest at the deaths of five policeman, reportedly shot by Israeli forces on Thursday.

Cairo said it held Israel politically and legally responsible, and demanded an investigation and an apology.

Israel has promised to investigate the deaths, amid claims that Israeli forces killed the officers while chasing suspected Palestinian militants.

It is the first time in a decade that Egypt has withdrawn its ambassador.

The Egyptian Attorney General in El-Arish has issued its first report on the Sinai killings, saying that Israel used projectiles that explode inside the body, confirming the intent to kill.

The report added that one of the soldiers was hit by seven bullets to various parts of the body and another in the chest and abdomen, confirming that there was intent to kill the targets.

The blood of Egyptians is too valuable to go unanswered, said Egyptian Prime Minister Essam Sharaf in response to the killing of five Egyptian soldiers in an Israeli attack in Sinai.

The revolution was made to restore Egyptian dignity at home and abroad, Sharaf said in a statement on his official Facebook page, and what was acceptable in Egypt before the revolution will not be acceptable in Egypt after the revolution.

He also said that he was weighing available alternatives with regard to the Sinai killings, without explaining the nature of those alternatives.

An Egyptian military official said the country's forces are making a comprehensive assessment of the border situation to determine the reasons for the killing and injury of the Egyptian troops and take whatever steps necessary to prevent it from happening again in the future.

Egyptian security experts warn Israel is planning on taking control in part of the Sinai Peninsula with support from the United States.

The move would be a proactive step by the Israelis after the ouster of Israeli ally and former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak.

Former Major General Sameh Seif El-Yezel, an expert on national security and intelligence, said that Israel was planning on crossing Egyptian borders and occupying somewhere between five and seven kilometers of the Sinai Peninsula in order to secure its borders. He pointed out that world powers would support Israel in case that happened.

Another security expert Ibrahim Salah said the plan had leaked during the onset of Egypts Jan. 25 revolution. He said that Israel managed to convince the U.S. that the Mubarak removal would threaten the stability of its borders with Egypt and that it was in the best interest to secure those boundaries by occupying part of Sinai by any means necessary.

Egyptian newspaper Al-Masri Al-Yawm quoted Egyptian security sources as saying that the situation in Sinai has become serious, as tensions rise at home and abroad. He said on one hand there is an internal conflict across the peninsula between elements from the Egyptian armed forces and armed groups, and on the other hand, the Israelis have attacked in the north, confirming fears that Israel has intent to move into the peninsula.

The sources said that Israel wanted to demonstrate that Egypt was unable to control security in Sinai and that its borders with Egypt are not secure. He also said there was a possibility that in the near future, Israel would ask for international armed forces to be deployed to monitor its borders with Egypt.

Egypt were not aiding terrorists. Hamas has denied responsibility for the attacks. It is unlikely that it was Hamas who attacked the Israeli soldiers. Egypt has been trying to secure the Sinai area. Egypt thinks that is was Al Qaeda who were involved.

Israel is just being trigger happy as usual. They have attacked Gaza when there is no evidence about who made the original attacks. Israeli soldiers chased the attackers and then when they reached the border they fired across the border killing 5 Egyptian policemen.

Most of the international community don't even think it was Hamas. Even Israel has backtracked now and are coming up with a different story.

The ones responsible are the PRC (Popular Resistance Committees) and they have admitted to it. Hamas has been trying to stop rocket attacks for more than ayear.
