SC you should have gone to Specsavers :-))

Seymour Clearly - 14 Apr 2007 12:17 - 5657 of 11003

Wash your mouth out with soap. Grrrr

:-)

Hilary,

iTunes. Not properly.

I think I looked at it with my office machine and got a feeling that it also loaded some junk.

Presumably iTunes will still handle MP3 files?

ThePublisher - 14 Apr 2007 13:41 - 5659 of 11003

Specsavers for my PC as well please.

ThePublisher - 14 Apr 2007 13:41 - 5660 of 11003

Sorry folks.

hilary - 14 Apr 2007 17:15 - 5661 of 11003

TP,

I can't recall iTunes loading any junk.

And yes it handles MP3 files. You just drag them into your playlist, although they stay in their original location and iTunes merely links to them.

ThePublisher - 14 Apr 2007 17:54 - 5662 of 11003

Hilary,

I remember that I lost contact with my CD drive fairly soon after downloading iTunes and some kind souls on this thread helped me deal with an odd entry in the registry.

It was probably a coincidence but it made me think twice about the software.

I'm now coming to terms with what the Media Player can do so I may wait a bit before trying iTunes. Did you opt for it for any particular feature?

TP

hilary - 16 Apr 2007 14:20 - 5663 of 11003

TP,

I've got a house full of iPod Nanos and you need iTunes to sync the iPod. That's the main reason that I use it, but I do happen to think that it's very good for organising playlists nonetheless.

The Outlook Express logon box won't go away. All the details are correctly entered but when I click OK the wretched box reappears and so on ad infinitum. I can receive mail but can't send. I've tried re-installing the email account but that doesn't help. The mail account is working fine via BT/Yahoo. I've Googled the problem but nothing seems to come up. Any suggestions from the tech wizards?

ThePublisher - 17 Apr 2007 08:34 - 5665 of 11003

hilary,

Thanks for that about iTunes.

I'm getting cleverer with MP now. Just need to find out whether the version 11 can link directly into Napster. As far as I can ascertain V10 did - but not V11.

Not a major problem as the Napster dowload software is fine, but it would be tidier if I could do everything with MMP.

Something is making IE7 run veeerrrryyy slowly... I thought I'd tracked it to a
problem I've had with my wireless network but I've disabled all of that and it is still
too slow too work with....

Virus scan shows nothing.

Have reinstalled IE7 but no joy.

All other stuff like Outlook works fine...

Any ideas where I look next?

Haystack - 24 Apr 2007 22:29 - 5668 of 11003

Some of the anti virus systems slow it up. Macafee especially.

Greystone - 24 Apr 2007 22:44 - 5669 of 11003

Haystack - No, its worse than that. Not just slow, it literally takes minutes to load
a page.

I ran PC Pitstop and it said everything was just great....

The problem is something interfering with IE7.

Actually, I find if I disable Wireless Network Connection before I load the browser
it seems OK. So, it is definately something to do with wireless....

Haystack - 24 Apr 2007 23:24 - 5670 of 11003

Have you tried to look at the task manager (ctrl-alt-del) and look at processes. See if there is anything that is using a lot of cpu. you can sort the list into cpu usage by clicking cpu once or twice for ascending or descending. Do it while it is loading a a page slowly.

I forget, do you have a router Greystone? If so try rebooting it since they sometimes get their knickers in a twist.

Greystone - 25 Apr 2007 05:59 - 5672 of 11003

I'm using a USB Broadband Router (Speedtouch) suppplied by Telefonica

(The wireless router is switched off.)

ThePublisher - 25 Apr 2007 08:04 - 5673 of 11003

G.

Ditto to K with regard to rebooting the router. Mine needs doing from time to time.

And you had that telecoms prob last week didn't you. Might be a residual fault.

No techie me, I'm afraid. Just clutching at straws.

Of course you could always try installing Opera, or another browser, as a short term fix.

Seymour Clearly - 25 Apr 2007 18:20 - 5674 of 11003

At work we run word and need to access it several times a day. Our main management software calls a word file to merge various fields and the problem we have is that whichever machine it's on, it takes an absolute age to load. Word is on the individual machines and the merge data comes from the server, which is really another workstation with a bigger HD. Proper hardwired 100Mbs network.

Does anyone know how we can speed up Word's loading? It's an absolute pain.

Optimist - 25 Apr 2007 19:33 - 5675 of 11003

SC

I used to do a similar thing and had little problem.

Two things occur to me:-

How many users are connected to the workstation/server? Win2K and I think Win XP limit the number of network connections to 10. You could have more than one connection from a single machine. So this has the potential to slow things down significantly.

The other possibility, do you have anti virus installed on each computer? Virus scanning can slow the loading of Word documents so it might be worth excluding known documents from the virus scan.
