THE TALK TO YOURSELF THREAD. (NOWT)

goldfinger - 09 Jun 2005 12:25

Thought Id start this one going because its rather dead on this board at the moment and I suppose all my usual muckers are either at the Stella tennis event watching Dim Tim (lose again) or at Henly Regatta eating cucumber sandwiches (they wish,...NOT).

Anyway please feel free to just talk to yourself blast away and let it go on any company or subject you wish. Just wish Id thought of this one before.

cheers GF.

UK debt

"Mainstream media headlines today are focused on Britain's record national debt, which just surpassed £1 trillion, a figure that can only exponentially increase unless the entire mechanism of Government finance is overhauled. The truth however is much worse, factoring in all liabilities including state and public sector pensions, the real national debt is closer to £4.8 trillion, some £78,000 for every person in the UK".

One of the many things Cameron and Osborne and cronies are avoiding or lying about!

2517GEORGE - 23 Feb 2015 12:43 - 56879 of 81564

Wrongly in my opinion the pensions liability has never been taken into account when assessing our National Debt, this is true for both Tory AND Labour governments.

It seems two individuals who get duped can dupe others into paying them for dubious information.

If one is duped so easily, is that person fit to be Chairman of The Intelligence and Security Committee of Parliament ?

How many on that committee previously claimed falsely for expenses?

What are the "Fees" for being on that committee?

Fred1new - 23 Feb 2015 14:35 - 56883 of 81564

What is laughable is Rifkind was chairman of a security firm.

Must have a look at contracts.

Think it is a pity someone can't live on £67000 Plus expenses.

Have to raise the basic wage!

MaxK - 23 Feb 2015 14:37 - 56884 of 81564

Gordon Brown, the former prime minister, declared additional income of close to £1 million, followed by Geoffrey Cox, the Conservative MP, who declared earnings of £820,000 — 12 times the annual MP wage.

Max.

I suggest you balance post56887 with:

"Office of Gordon & Sarah Brown

Welcome to the website of Gordon and Sarah Brown. Gordon and Sarah are both passionate advocates of many charity campaigns. Their pro bono work includes Gordon serving as UN Special Envoy for Global Education, Chair of the Global Campaign for Education High Level Panel, board member for the World Wide Web Foundation, Patron of the Burma Campaign UK and support for many other causes as detailed in his biography on this site. In his constituency, Gordon is President of the Fife Society for the Blind and Patron of the Fife Historic Buildings Trust.
Sarah is President of Theirworld, Sarah is also a Trustee of Theirworld, Chair of the Executive Board of the Global Business Coalition for Education and a Patron and supporter of many charities including the White Ribbon Alliance, SHINE Education Trust, Women’s Aid and Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centres. More details are included on her biography page.
The Office of Gordon and Sarah Brown was established to support Gordon and Sarah in their work and to facilitate their ongoing involvement in public life. This is separate from Gordon’s work as an MP and includes his charitable and pro bono work. The costs of the Office, including salaries and rent, are paid from income received by the Office for paid speaking engagements undertaken by Gordon. Alongside paid speaking engagements (all of which cover Office costs) Gordon gives regular pro bono speeches to universities, charities and other organisations and of course in his role as a constituency MP.
We are budgeting to meet salaries, accommodation costs and staff expenses to support this work of around £550,000 a year. In addition to the costs of the Office, the costs associated with Mr Brown’s role as Distinguished Global Leader in Residence at New York University are met by New York University; as Chair of the WEF Global Strategic Infrastructure Initiative are met by the World Economic Forum.
All the money received by the Office of Gordon and Sarah Brown goes either directly to charities like Theirworld for children’s causes, and the Jennifer Brown Research Laboratory which supports medical research into pregnancy and neonatal research to save newborn lives, or to support other charitable and public service projects. The Office of Gordon and Sarah Brown also supports a number of Education For All and A World At School projects around the world as we join efforts to get every child a place at school.
Mr Brown’s sole personal earnings are his salary as an MP. In 2009 he renounced the Prime Ministerial pension he was entitled to receive. He pays full tax on his income.
In addition to the £1,053,702 that has been gifted in charitable donations as part of a continuing and rising programme of disbursements to good causes, the Office of Gordon and Sarah Brown pays corporation tax on all profits, as recorded in the official records at Companies House.
Neither Mr nor Mrs Brown receive salary, dividends, or profits from The Office of Gordon and Sarah Brown, which was constituted solely for and remains only for the purpose of employing staff to further their charitable and public service work and donating to good causes both locally and internationally."

£15 to £20k a week for a part time job (being an mp is supposed to be the main job) is a lorra Wonga by anyones standard.

Stan - 23 Feb 2015 16:23 - 56895 of 81564

cynic - 23 Feb 2015 16:26 - 56896 of 81564

stan/chris - why would you expect any sense from that quarter?

==========

in principle, i certainly have no problem with MPs having "outside interests", but certainly there will be grey areas - i have no idea how clearcut this particular issue is - where lobbying on behalf of a "generic" issue crosses over into being on behalf of a specific company

from what i have heard, the parliamentary rules themselves are far from clear

Stan - 23 Feb 2015 17:12 - 56897 of 81564

I note that Rifkind and Straw are/or were both members of the Legal Profession.
