Anyone able to help a technophobic.
Since upgrading to Vista I often encounter the following problem when attempting to go onto Internet Explorer. Sometimes it requires over 5 attempts till it works.
I open Internet Explorer and am presented with the following message (and often a frozen screen).
Internet Explorer has encountered a problem with an add-on and needs to close.
Add-on name Site Adv.dll
Company name McAfee Inc
Details Site Adviser.
Once open the problem does not arise, it is just on the initial opening of IE.
I do not want to loose this add-on if possible.
Suggestions gratefully received.

First of all I don't know Vista, but it sounds like a conflict between McAfee antivirus / security and IE. Is your copy of IE the latest version? If not suggest you download that from Microsoft.
If that's not it McAfee need to know so they can resolve it.
Or you could use Mozilla Firefox :-)

Is this the problem? Look near the bottom of the page. The problem was being discussed in January. It may be a highjack problem as ADV.DLL is also a well known trojan. Have you tried virus and adware scans?

Thanks Seymour,
Yes latest IE. As to McAfee, it came in an included deal with Dell and Vista.
This problem did not occur immediately after installing Vista but has sort of crept in. I will contact McAfee and see what they say.
Vista looks good, but there are many having problems. I might end up getting rid of Vista if I can't cure it. As to Mozilla, it wont work with all the sites I use.
Hi Haystack,
Will look at that over the weekend when I have more time. I do a regular full scan, last one being last Friday. It was clear but will do another on Saturday.
Will let you know the results of your suggestions.
Thanks Again both

I don't think there is anyone around here using Trend PC-Cillin as a virus protector.
But if there is be warned that the upgrade to the 2007 causes real problems in hogging CPU power.
I had a tedious day yesterday with an almost inanimate PC, which was only solved by reverting to my 2006 software.

Hi all - question..I'm sitting here toiling with ye old dial up as broadband seems to have gone awol. I've had this before on the other PC - who incidently has also gone awol on the broadband front today - and did fix it, but can't remember exactly how.
Question is this.....it keep saying 'looking for AOL with TCP/IP' now as soon as it does this when I try and connect I know it's going to come back with 'there is no internet connection' despite the fact a perfectly good and operating DSL is sitting there, with 2 light on and working perfectly well.
It needs to say it is 'Initialising DSL' when I try and connect for the computer to locate and recognise my DSL, otherwise with this TCP/IP rubbish I'm totally stuck.
Quite likely it is due to an aol update, they do cause fun and games at times.
So questions are:
1. Is anyone else on AOL and have they had this same problem recently (I use a BT voyager 105 DSL if that helps), if they have had the problem, can they remember how they fixed it?
2. What is heck is TCP/IP?
OK IP I presume is internet provider but TCP, aside of the obvious antiseptic I'm clueless......

TCP/IP is just the name of a protocol - Transport Control Protocol/Internet Protocol. In practice it is a collection of routines that sit between yout application (Internet browser say) and the outside world. It provides a series of features that are used by file transfer, email, web browsin etc. It handles the connection to the internet and the handling and oranising of the packets of data.

So any ideas why it wont recognise my DSL?

Have you tried the usual rebooting your PC and power cycling your modem?
Was there a recent AOL update. They are pretty obvious as they occur when you log off.
You have to be careful with AOL updates as they are usually downloaded and installed as you logoff from AOL. You must not shutdown your PC, stop the AOL application or switch off the modem while this happening as you can end up with a partially updated AOL client on your PC.

Yes I know, haven't seen a message through on an update recently. Done the reboot and the usual Fix It stuff, even run the AOL test on the DSL software, may have to reinstall DSL software I think. Oh well - thanks Haystack :>)

Have you checked the physical connection of the DSL modem to your PC. I guess it is a USB connection. You could try a different USB socket for instance. What about the DSL modem connection to your phone line socket? Is that alright?

Thats all fine, computer right by main socket and all connections fine, think its a software issue to be honest.

Look at the device manager and see if the modem looks installed.
