Thanks for the Extra bit. Will have a look.

Ta Again.

I don't think there is anyone around here using Trend PC-Cillin as a virus protector.

But if there is be warned that the upgrade to the 2007 causes real problems in hogging CPU power.

I had a tedious day yesterday with an almost inanimate PC, which was only solved by reverting to my 2006 software.

Hi all - question..I'm sitting here toiling with ye old dial up as broadband seems to have gone awol. I've had this before on the other PC - who incidently has also gone awol on the broadband front today - and did fix it, but can't remember exactly how.

Question is this.....it keep saying 'looking for AOL with TCP/IP' now as soon as it does this when I try and connect I know it's going to come back with 'there is no internet connection' despite the fact a perfectly good and operating DSL is sitting there, with 2 light on and working perfectly well.

It needs to say it is 'Initialising DSL' when I try and connect for the computer to locate and recognise my DSL, otherwise with this TCP/IP rubbish I'm totally stuck.

Quite likely it is due to an aol update, they do cause fun and games at times.

So questions are:
1. Is anyone else on AOL and have they had this same problem recently (I use a BT voyager 105 DSL if that helps), if they have had the problem, can they remember how they fixed it?

2. What is heck is TCP/IP?
OK IP I presume is internet provider but TCP, aside of the obvious antiseptic I'm clueless......

Haystack - 25 May 2007 15:50 - 5729 of 11003

TCP/IP is just the name of a protocol - Transport Control Protocol/Internet Protocol. In practice it is a collection of routines that sit between yout application (Internet browser say) and the outside world. It provides a series of features that are used by file transfer, email, web browsin etc. It handles the connection to the internet and the handling and oranising of the packets of data.

stockbunny - 25 May 2007 15:52 - 5730 of 11003

So any ideas why it wont recognise my DSL?

Haystack - 25 May 2007 15:55 - 5731 of 11003

Have you tried the usual rebooting your PC and power cycling your modem?

Was there a recent AOL update. They are pretty obvious as they occur when you log off.

You have to be careful with AOL updates as they are usually downloaded and installed as you logoff from AOL. You must not shutdown your PC, stop the AOL application or switch off the modem while this happening as you can end up with a partially updated AOL client on your PC.

stockbunny - 25 May 2007 15:58 - 5732 of 11003

Yes I know, haven't seen a message through on an update recently. Done the reboot and the usual Fix It stuff, even run the AOL test on the DSL software, may have to reinstall DSL software I think. Oh well - thanks Haystack :>)

Haystack - 25 May 2007 15:58 - 5733 of 11003

Have you checked the physical connection of the DSL modem to your PC. I guess it is a USB connection. You could try a different USB socket for instance. What about the DSL modem connection to your phone line socket? Is that alright?

stockbunny - 25 May 2007 15:59 - 5734 of 11003

Thats all fine, computer right by main socket and all connections fine, think its a software issue to be honest.

Haystack - 25 May 2007 16:00 - 5735 of 11003

Look at the device manager and see if the modem looks installed.

Control Panel, System, Hardware, Device Manager

Haystack - 25 May 2007 16:01 - 5736 of 11003

If it is installed, check that it is enabled.

stockbunny - 25 May 2007 16:07 - 5737 of 11003

Haystack - that's helpful - I will check that when I get these s/b's closed out - thanks didn't think of looking in there :>)

Hi guys

im looking to replace the graphics card i currently have, however, im not sure of the interface i need to the motherboard. How do i tell what my current interface is?

Haystack - 25 May 2007 20:25 - 5739 of 11003

Your current graphics may be a separate card or it may be embedded on the mother board. You should have received a user guide to your motherboard with your PC. If not then you may be able to identify it and look on the appropriate web site. If it is a separate card then you need to remove it and install the new one. You will need to determine what sort of slot is being used for the card - PCI short or long for instance.

One simple way to et a bit more information is to go to the desktop and right click. You should then click 'properties'. Then click 'settings'. Click 'advanced' and then 'adaptor'. This should identifiy the type of card or graphics capability that you have. It will also show the amount of graphics memory that you have. If the graphics is embedded on the motherboard then the memory may well be part of your main memory being grabbed (this is very common). Click on proprties and it should show if it is a PCI bus.

Haystack

many thanks

the card i have is a matrox G550 dual head. when i go into properties it has location PCI bus 1, device, 0, function 0

does this mean i need a PCI (not AGP or PCI express card) ?

Fundamentalist - 25 May 2007 21:24 - 5741 of 11003

Ok, the motherboard is an ABIT AS8. In the detail i can find it says it has 1 x AGP 8x slot and 4 x PCI expansion slots

Does this mean i have to use an AGP rather than a PCI Express graphics card???

Spaceman - 25 May 2007 21:56 - 5742 of 11003

F yes.

Fundamentalist - 25 May 2007 22:02 - 5743 of 11003
