PC & MAC CLINIC - On line problem solving. (CPU)

Thanks Opt,

I've FProt, which my IT chappie likes, and the old version of PC-Cillin that preceeded the errant 2007 version.

What adds to my feeling that it was a mis-install is the fact that it produced between 15 and 20 new HijackThis entries.

TP, Don't know I've been any help really as you are not much further on.
I being the impulsive type would be trying another download, but that's me LOL.
Going out for an hour, hope it's all sorted soon.

Opto,

That's a good idea. It may be the original download that is duff. It's quite a large file so I'll pull it down again in anticipation of contact from AVG.

I'm inclined not to bother to try to install it until they tell me what part Roxy plays in my life! I always worry about installing and removing software and the danger of the malfunctioning version leaving some debris behind.

Anyway I can survive with what I've got if I ignore the nags from PC-Cillin about my failure to have the right serial numbers.

TP

I have a Netgear DG834PN Router ADSL Modem, I never got it connected to my Pipex ADSL modem, I am now connected to Virgin Media via a Cable modem how do I now connect the Netgear router to the Cable Modem or do I need to buy something else if so what do you suggest for wireless connect in the house ;-)

Seymour Clearly - 01 Jun 2007 00:29 - 5771 of 11003

Rich, we have pretty much the same setup at work (Netgear and Virgin cable modem). The only problem is you have a router modem and a modem and are trying to connect both. I think (and I'm prepared to be corrected) that you need a router without a modem to attach to your Virgin cable modem. I have a couple of spare routers but they don't have wireless - let me know if you could use one.

Richgit69 - 01 Jun 2007 16:44 - 5772 of 11003

Seymour, thanks for the info, if I cant find a wireless router, I'll keep your offer in mind regarding the spare routers ;-)

Haystack - 01 Jun 2007 18:43 - 5773 of 11003

The Netgear DG834PN Router ADSL Modem is a wireless router modem. You just need to connect it by itself.

rich,
i think you will need a CABLE router, pipex is ADSL,
if you can use a router and ethernet, you will not loose bandwidth,
i have just run a ethernet cable from my router to downstairs lounge,
i too have NTL now VIRGIn 20 meg, with the PC's next to my router i get 19 meg all the time, with my lappy on wireless i get about 10 meg,so using ethernet cable from router should be much better, just need to get my techy guy to connect up,

Seymour Clearly - 01 Jun 2007 20:14 - 5775 of 11003

Virgin / NTL say you must only use their modem so you then need to connect this into a router.

Richgit69 - 01 Jun 2007 21:51 - 5776 of 11003

scussy, Haystack and Seymore thanks ;-)

We unplugged the Virgin Cablemodem and tried plugging the connections from that into the Netgear DGG834PN but they wouldnt fit, wrong type of connections, :-( So I must need a different Wireless Router for a Cable modem any recommendations??

scussy - 02 Jun 2007 08:56 - 5777 of 11003

Richgit69 - 02 Jun 2007 14:32 - 5778 of 11003

Scussy, thanks

Is there any difference between Netgear WPN824 and Netgear WPN824UK and are they both 108mbs

scussy - 02 Jun 2007 16:02 - 5779 of 11003

just dug my box out,i cannot see anything about the UK one on the box, sorry,
here is some customer views on the NETGEAR wpn824 UK
what it does say is, to get the max performance ues with a rangemax wirless adapter, which i dont, thats why i only get the 54 mbs and maybe the loss of download speed, you can see the adapter here
so it looks ok but you might need to get the USB adapter for the best results,

scussy thanks ;-)

Stable try this site

I use bitdefender and it works with level 2 ,but the settings for one computer are slightly different .I have one with the firewall disabled and Zone alarm in its place. The other works with the full setup and no problems with the speed of l2.A month's trial is free if you buy use the USA site for price.

Digger
Thks for suggestion, I am sure that there must be a cure for the Kaspersky problem, As I have only just purchased it I do not want to make a change without exploring all ideas.

David,

Take a screen shot (press print screen button above your cursor keys and then paste it into a word document and print it off.

I've switched over to Sky Max Broadband (excellent so far !) and the wireless router is defaulted to WPA security. It also gives me the option of WEP with a bit of playing around.

Which is best? Any disadvantages with going for the most secure which I suppose is the obvious choice?

I was going to ask this, plus a couple more comments, on the 'best ISP provider' thread. What's happened to it? Am I going blind? I certify that a) I have looked at 4 pages of threads (twice). b) I have my glasses on, c) I've used the Search facility and d) not had any alcohol for at least 12 hours. Still can't find it. Has it been pulled?
