Ronald Koeman hailed the ingenuity of Gylfi Sigurdsson after the Icelander’s “incredible” 40-yard strike helped Everton secure their place in the group stage of the UEFA Europa League.
The Blues, who headed to Hajduk Split’s Stadion Poljud with a 2-0 lead after the first leg, fell behind on the night when Josip Radosevic struck on the stroke of half-time to halve the deficit.
But, just 13 seconds into the second period, Sigurdsson marked his full Toffees debut with a sensational long-range strike that ensured Koeman’s side progression with a 3-1 aggregate victory.
It was an effort that understandably left manager Koeman purring after the full-time whistle.
"I saw the goal, yes, but I don't think everyone on the bench did!” said Koeman. “It was just incredible. I don't have any other word for it. You need to be really clever to see that possibility and, even after two or three weeks of the season, maybe it is the goal of the season. It was really important to be level so quickly in the second half.
“I haven’t seen him yet as he was doing interviews straight after the final whistle but when I do see him, I’ll tell him it wasn’t a bad goal.”
When asked whether or not he’d scored a similar goal during his playing days, Koeman responded: “My goals were a little bit closer to the box… but they were also nice ones!”

And the dream start continues.
Cardiff City today became only the 5th team in the history of the English second tier to win their opening five matches.
The other four all got promoted at the end of the season.

Burnley's first 5 away games are Chelsea, Spuds, Liverpool, Everton and Man City so not the easiest start on paper, however our first 5 home are WBA, Screaming Alice, Uddersfield, Wet Spam and Newcastle so hopeful there.
This is Stan on the fly bridge at the Fortress signing out.

Barkley stuns Chelsea with late u-turn
Lyndon Lloyd Thursday 31 August 2017 83 Comments [Jump to last]
Ross Barkley has turned down a move to Chelsea after a £35m fee had been agreed with Everton and his medical was already underway.
Sky Sports reported that the 23-year-old was set to complete a deadline-beating £30m move to Stamford Bridge but changed his mind before the deal could be completed.
Though there are conflicting accounts of whether the player actually started his medical, the general story was corroborated by the Blues' major shareholder, Farhad Moshiri, who told Sky that Barkley wanted to reconsider his position in January, by which time he should have recovered from a hamstring injury.
Seems a strange decision by Ross. Lot of conspiracy theory's circulating. Surely Chelsea would have given him more money than Spurs would have paid him salary wise. Maybe money isn't a factor at all who actually knows. He needs to be playing, it wont be as a ten if he stays at Everton there are three now ahead of him. Weird situation.
