Hi , my question is, what on earth is a cache-removal.virginmedia.com

I am having problems with getting certain websites sites and then suddenly this popped up. The actual instructions I understand, however as I do not actually understand anything to do with the computer jargon, I don't know if I have been specially selected by some hackers etc. They want me to ....If there is a tick in the box beside 'Use a proxy server for your LAN', you should remove it.

If you're using Internet Explorer:
Open Internet Explorer
Click on the 'Tools' menu at the top of the screen and select 'Internet Options'
On the next screen that appears, select the 'Connections' tab and click on the 'LAN settings' button
You'll now see a screen like this:
If there is a tick in the box beside 'Use a proxy server for your LAN', you should remove it:
Next click on OK to close this screen, and on OK again to close the next one. That's it! You're ready to start making the most of our improved service!

Up date, finally found a phone number for the internet provider and it seems that they are having problems with my area and it's more serious than first thought. The engineers are working on it, lol.

For some strange reason some websites I can still access, such as MoneyAm.

It is almost as though you are losing the Bios settings everytime you shutdown and it is attempting to recognise everything from scratch as plug and play. Have you considered changing the Bios backup battery on the motherboard or at least testing the voltage of it with a meter?

H. It never occured to me. The PC is only 3 yrs old. Is it likely that the battery is kaputt?
Is it an easy job to swap?

I'll have a look for my meter's multi-range in the garage. If I can't find it I suppose it'll be as easy to swap the battery anyway.

Edit: What other symptoms would a dead battery give? Time and dates on the bios are correct for example.

Have a look through your BIOS settings for a Hard Disk or IDE detection option. This should setup your hard disks (which is different form selecting the boot device). Once this is done, save the new settings and exit. Then see if the message goes away.

Optimist: Nothing like it that I can see. I've looked under all sections of Main, Adv,Power & Boot.

I've found a website for Bios info for beginners :-) and I'm going to trawl through it for clues.

Copying my Outlook calendar and address book........

I exported to a .pst file and when I import it to my home machine I get the address book but not the calendar.

Any clues, chums?

On my Outlook 2003 I'm given a list of folders to select for export and one of them is Calender. It's sometime since I've actually done it with a pst file, which is the best way, but I've just tried it with a csv file and it exports fine so I assume that a pst export will still work.

Sorry I can't be more help. Perhaps your best bet would be to read through the motherboard manual.

If the time/date are being kept then the battery is probably not the problem, bt it does look like it is failing to remember something about your set-up.

You were right, of course.

I thought that Outlook was putting all the info into the .pst file.

I now realise that you must choose what info (addresses, calendar, etc) you want to export. I failed to choose Calendar yesterday. I brought the lappie into the office this morning and it has gone across as sweet as pie.

Now I need to check that ActiveSync is easily downloadable as I'll need that to dock my PDA into my home machine instead of the one here in the office. I am sure it is - but will come back here pretty smartly if I can't find it.

Thanks Doc for all those links - but oddly the few that I looked at did not make the point that you need to identify what aspects of the data that you plan to export.

I have cablemodem with virginmedia, its the XL package 10mb when I started in March I found out last week I should now be running at 20mb and if I wasnt by today I should contact the helpline. with I did, they told my Cablemodem NTL 250 was able to run at 20mb great you'd think ;-)

But after doing a few tests online with the support we found out that I was only getting 6mb from my 10mb connection, also he said that because it was connected via a USB connection it would be slow anyway and it also depends on my the lan card installed

Can someone till me if they are correct, and how do I sort it out

do I need to buy anthing? or will the Cablewireless modem router from netgear do it all for me?

have you looked at the speed using http://www.speedtest.net/ i get 18 - 19 meg on all my pc's and lappy which i am on now,i have now got my lappy on ethernet cable from my netgear router,this is fed from the cable router (blue)it's the 250,now i get on the laptop greater speeds then when on the wireless side,

you can see that the download speed if diff but the uploadload speed is allways about 730,
so when you do your speed test the upload speed should be the same 730,if its alot lower then 730 i think you might still be on 10 meg,
i think the 10 meg was about 480 up and about 8-9 meg down,
so you could be on the old 10 meg still,and is it running through wireless,
then you may have to look at the cable router settings,the tech guys should be the ones to tell you how to do that,

3. What if I am not downloading at my correct speed?
If, after completing the speed test example above, you are still not receiving your full download speed, then there are a few more checks you can complete. Please check your Network Interface Card (NIC or Ethernet card) or, if you have one, any home network equipment, making sure it has a fully rated 10/100baseT port available to the Internet. Some older network cards and routers only have a 10Mb port, and these are not fast enough to transfer the data that is being downloaded. This gives the appearance that you are not connecting at the correct speed. You may also see this issue if you connect the modem to your computer using the Universal Serial Bus (USB) connection. Please try connecting your modem to your computer using a Broadband Network Interface Card, using a CAT5 (RJ45) cable, and after confirming that your network card and any other equipment does have the 10/100baseT standards outlined above. This should greatly improve your download speed.
