In a dramatic intervention into the general election campaign, the media tycoon announced that the cash injection towards Ukip's drive to win more MPs was a "challenging" gesture to shake up a Westminster establishment that has lost the trust of millions of voters.

And he hailed the massive boost to the election war chest of Mr Farage's People's Army as a "Fanfare for the Common Man."

The cash comes on top of a £300,000 donation given to Ukip last year by Mr Desmond, who also owns the Sunday Express, the Daily Star and OK! magazine.

Frankly I think the Conservatives are more dependable...but....why the hell has DC not taken up as many opportunities as possible for debates....I mean a politician must get his views exposed to as many as possible in election times....you have to prove your worth.......the problem I have with Labour is that in opposition : they will promise anything to get into power and they always blame others for all the trouble they caused in previous governments....the worse thing is that a lot of the general public will believe their promises.....I have a long memory and can remember very well how badly governed the UK was under Labour.....I'll be glad when this blinkin' election is over.....

Greece has been pushed a step closer to default and potential exit from the euro after one of its main lenders, the International Monetary Fund, all but ruled out allowing the cash-strapped country to delay repaying the €1bn (£722,000) due next month.

The head of the IMF, Christine Lagarde, said delaying the payments would be an unprecedented action that would only make the situation worse.

Speaking at the organisation’s spring meeting, she said: “Payment delays have not been granted by the board of the IMF in the last 30 years.”

Her intervention is likely to heighten fears that senior policymakers in the US and Europe are preparing for Greece to leave the eurozone.

IMF chief Christine Lagarde praises UK economy

The head of the International Monetary Fund, Christine Lagarde, has endorsed the UK government's economic strategy.

Speaking at an IMF meeting in Washington she said: "It's obvious what's happening in the UK has worked."

Ms Lagarde played down differences between the IMF calculation of the future deficit and the more optimistic one provided by the Office for Budget Responsibility.

She said the figures were virtually the same, but just calculated differently.

George Osborne was sharing a panel with Ms Lagarde and German finance minister Wolfgang Schaeuble when she made the remarks.

"Generally in any election year, the teams that provide the hypotheticals on which future deficits are forecast, err on the side of caution and assume that whatever is announced is not necessarily or inevitably going to happen," she said.

Ms Lagarde added that the UK authorities had managed to provide the right balance of spending cuts and revenue raising.

"It's clearly also delivering results, because when we look at the comparative growth rates delivered by various countries in Europe, it's obvious that what's happening in the UK has actually worked," she said.
