THE TALK TO YOURSELF THREAD. (NOWT)

goldfinger - 09 Jun 2005 12:25

Thought Id start this one going because its rather dead on this board at the moment and I suppose all my usual muckers are either at the Stella tennis event watching Dim Tim (lose again) or at Henly Regatta eating cucumber sandwiches (they wish,...NOT).

Anyway please feel free to just talk to yourself blast away and let it go on any company or subject you wish. Just wish Id thought of this one before.

cheers GF.

i saw a copy the Mail over breakfast, and no wonder it's held in little esteem
it makes the Telegraph look almost left wing!

nevertheless, i certainly agree with its sentiment re mccluskey and his scary acolytes

cynic - 22 Apr 2015 09:24 - 58928 of 81564

meanwhile, the market has (at last) caught fright, though that may have something to do with greece
whereas it opened some 20 points to the good, it is now down 40
annoyingly, IG is having problems with its server(s), but at least i already hold a FTSE short

What did IG say about it , i called them but long wait also you can't get onto the help page

Stan - 22 Apr 2015 09:34 - 58930 of 81564

Alf as you and your "Con" Party mates continually quote the propaganda spewed out by the likes of the DM. Etc it's no wonder your all paranoid about alternatives to Right Wing rhetoric.

cynic - 22 Apr 2015 09:43 - 58931 of 81564

IG is now up and working again

===========

stan - today was mere happenstance; DM does not normally cross my eye-line
anyway, whatever the election brings, it brings - something fairly shambolic is my guess - and as always and in the past, i'll just adapt to it

Fred1new - 22 Apr 2015 09:52 - 58932 of 81564

Manuel,

You are becoming more and more detached.

If Scotland is part of the whole UK, in a "democracy" its elected MPs have a right to vote on any decision making on the whole of the UK.

They have the right to abstain, or otherwise, if they consider policies do not immediately effect Scotland.

But if part of the total changes, it is bound to have effect on all other parts of the total.

Even, moving a finger alters your balance. (In your case it might cause you to topple over.)

-=-=-=-=-=-==-=

McCluskey.

Would you disown your parents?

That is what the unions and their connections represent to Labour.

That is why they have achieved the improvement in social conditions in the UK over the last 100 years.

The labour party are not a party made up political bastards like the membership of the present tory party, and while having disagreements their parents are still prepared to respect them for what they have a achieved for them in the past.

Also, recognising the values which many in the unions as a "whole" body had and still have.

Their measurement of success is not the size of their wallets or flash car on the drive.

cynic - 22 Apr 2015 09:57 - 58933 of 81564

SNP does indeed have the right to vote in westminster, at least currently

i have no objection to trades unions per se, though i'm very glad indeed i never had to deal with them
however, i class mccluskey in the same family as scargill and therefore have very sceptical views as to his aims and motives ..... not overly much to do with the welfare of unite's members i dare say and a racing certainty with no concern whatsoever for the companies for whom unite's members work (you know; the entities who pay the salaries and other benefits)

The claim that over a million people are using Trussell Trust food banks is inaccurate. It comes from confusing the number of different people using Trussell Trust food banks in a year with the number of times they use the food banks.

The Trussell Trust collect their data from the vouchers used by people referred to their food banks. If one voucher feeds a family of 4 people, that’s 4 instances. If the same family visit again next week, that’s another 4 instances. The Trussell Trust say that on average people needed two food bank vouchers annually, so the number of people using food banks is likely to be around half of the 1.1 million figure.

After being contacted by Full Fact, the Trussell Trust have added a note explaining that “these are not all unique users” to their latest press release but this has not avoided widespread confusion. For example:

The Guardian: “Nearly 1.1 million people received at least three days of emergency food from the trust’s 445 food banks in 2014-15″.

The Daily Mail: “The country’s biggest food bank organisation yesterday claimed the number of people claiming free meal packages from its branches passed a million last year”.

Supply is not the same as demand

The rise in uses of Trussell Trust food banks came with a rise in the number of food banks themselves: from 56 food banks in 2009 to 445 food banks in 2014. This represents a major expansion of the Trust into new areas. The Trust served 29 UK local authorities (£) in 2009 but that number increased to 251 by 2013.

The increase in supply doesn’t necessarily reflect an increased demand for emergency food. There may be people in need of emergency food in the past who wouldn’t have shown up in the Trust’s figures because there was no Trussell Trust food bank nearby.

With the GE just over 2 weeks away I thought the market would be more volatile/nervous than it has been, although there is still time for the indices to plunge on the prospect of Nicola Sturgeon running the UK.

Without wishing to reduce the plight of those having to use food banks, let's not also forget it is in the Trussell Trusts interest to be seen to be well used.

hilary - 22 Apr 2015 10:56 - 58946 of 81564

George,

In a perverse kind of way, I think the market is thinking that no outright majority for either party = no contentious laws being passed for 5 years = stability and a maintaining of the status quo. They've seen that the last 5 years of Conservative/Lib Dem government haven't actually been that bad, and they're prepared for more of something similar in whatever guise.

The bookies are pricing Conservatives at 285/286 seats, Labour at 270 seats, Lib Dems at 25/26 seats and the SNP at 49/50 seats, so you'll be looking at centre ground laws being passed, and that's about it. Ed's not gonna get his mansion tax, Cameron's not gonna get his EU referendum, Sturgeon's not gonna get rid of Trident, so what's there to worry about?
