Might you want to rent a car when on holiday abroad? The rules have changed concerning Driving Licences in that there will no longer be any Paper Driving Licences produced by the DVLA.

Previously, these Paper Licences could be guaranteed to hold any conviction details, whereas the Photocard Licence could not. Hire car companies would therefore generally insist to see the paper copy at the time of the rental request.

THE DVLA have issued important new advice to all motorists intending to hire cars in future.

From June 8 2015, the paper counterpart of UK photocard driving licences will be abolished.

The paper counterpart has always contained details of any driving convictions or penalty points, but from June onwards, this information will have to be obtained online before you try to hire a car.

The DVLA has produced this video to help drivers ensure they are prepared for the changes:



The changes also mean that drivers looking to hire a car overseas may need to take a special code with them, so the hire company can check for details of any convictions or penalty points.

Drivers will need to log on to the DVLA website in advance, but each code is valid only for 72 hours, so anyone looking to hire a car more than three days into a trip overseas may need to source the code abroad.

The RAC has said more than half of drivers are unaware of the changes and they are keen to increase awareness before June 8.

Drivers have also been given mixed advice about what to do with their paper counterpart. The DVLA has recommended destroying it after June 8, but the AA has advised anyone wanting to hire a car to retain it, in case they encounter difficulties with hire firms.

Cameron is way ahead in popularity compared to the other choices. Cameron looks like easily winning the most seats. Labour is being comprehensively rejected in Scotland. The net result is that the public clearly want Cameron to be PM. It looks like they will get exactly that.

Not really. It shows that Labour have a long term problem in the rest of the UK. They are going to need huge swings to get elected in the future without Scotland.

The removal of the paper included element of the driving licence has to be a plus.

The ability for both drivers, car rental agencies and any other relevant parties, to be able to refer to a 'slap bang up to date' web site for their information, has definitely got to be a plus.

And it is going to save money in paper printing costs too.

For instance, have you checked if your own Driving Licence details are correct? This web site at least gives you that opportunity to do so, doesn't it?

I've just checked my own DL details and they are correct.

Interestingly, on this site the Identity verification section for your DL number is linked with your National Insurance number. This in turn allows a note to be produced on the site concerning your eyesight and whether it needs assistance or not to be able to drive (ie. Do you assist with or need/wear prescription glasses?)

So the site allows a check on your ID, your Driving Licence, and your Nat Insurance Number. This card could therefore be used by NHS patients when they present to ascertain whether they qualify for FREE medical treatment.

Also, the site allows people to sign up for Organ Donation and link this with the Nat. Ins. number too.

All very neat and efficient, eh?

I have no reason to qeustion my details or ever will, just like the vast majority of drivers, it's just another wast of time and money by an outfit trying to give the impresssion of doing something.
