Troys,
Looks like the mm's are trying to stop the volatility. Not too sure what to do with this share. Placements take the piss! Cheap money from the shareholders. I hope the funds go to good use!

ZOO DIGITAL GROUP PLC
Through sound financial and business management, ZOO Digital
Group has built an 11m turnover in under five years.
Hot topic: Managing high growth
Sector: Creative services and media
Size of firm: 140 employees
Location: Sheffield
Website: www.zoodigitalgroup.com
OBJECTIVES
ZOO was established in 2001 to develop and market a
revolutionary interactive DVD-Video development system called
DVD-EXTRA STUDIO, and also to produce a range of interactive
entertainment titles across multiple platforms, including DVDVideo
using this system. The first consumer products were
subsequently published by Universal Studios and have achieved
extraordinary sales. Group turnover doubled last year to 11m,
due to licensing of DVD-EXTRA STUDIO and also to the success
of the company's publishing subsidiary, which scored a huge hit
with the DVD game, 'Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?'
The primary objectives for the management team have been to
manage and finance the business effectively, during a sustained
period of dramatic international growth.
SOLUTION
Financing was a vital consideration in pursuing such rapid
growth. In order to fund product development and marketing,
the management team worked with advisers to secure backing
from existing and new institutional investors. A detailed
business case was developed to make the long-term value of
the business clear and this in turn has led to an influx of 7m in
new funds.
The company also made full use of available grants. Business
Link South Yorkshire helped with the applications and the
business has benefited from a number of grants, including
Invest for Growth, SMART (to fund an innovative research
project) and Export Initiative (to help the company move into
overseas markets).
On the subject of exports, the company wanted to exploit the
full potential of its product in as many markets as possible, but
without over-extending finances. While the company maintains
its own UK and North America sales operations, it took a lower
cost option in mainland Europe by appointing agents. The
agents were already well-established in these countries and
work on a commission only basis.
Staffing levels have had to increase dramatically with growth.
Two years ago the company employed 35 people. Now the
headcount stands at over 140. Recognising the importance of
maintaining the existing company ethos, the management team
took great care to select individuals who would fit in well with
the company culture and ethos.
The company also maintained a close relationship with its
existing staff. As the Chief Technical Officer, Stuart Green, puts
it, "With the company changing so rapidly it was important to
make sure that our existing people still identified with our
business and our goals. We conduct regular briefing sessions,
publish an e-newsletter and maintain a company intranet for
our employees. People tend to be more comfortable with
change if they have the bigger picture and feel involved."
The same can be said for customers. ZOO attaches great
importance to relationship management. Dedicated account
managers not only keep customers fully up-to-date with new
products and services, but also make sure that their
expectations are met. This ensures that rapid growth doesn't
distract the company from satisfying customers.
RESULTS
The 'Who Wants to be a Millionaire?' DVD game sold 150,000
units in its first year. This figure has grown to over one million
in the second year. The acceleration in sales has been helped by
ZOO's overseas marketing drive which led to the release of
versions of the title in eight territories, including France,
Germany and Australia.
The publishing deal with Universal also gave the company the
international distribution reach it needed to capitalise on DVDEXTRA's
potential. The product has become the standard for
interactive DVD development and ZOO is licensing the
technology to develop a variety of interactive DVD products
with TV and film companies, educators and others.
This activity is of course only possible due to strong financing.
At the same time costs have been carefully contained, through
tight budgeting and partnerships with sales agents, distributors
and manufacturers.
CHALLENGES
Stuart says, "The main challenge for our business is cashflow.
We've grown so quickly that we've had to keep a very close rein
on finance. It would have been easy for the wages bill to run
away with us or for development to eat up so much in finance
that we couldn't run day to day. This remains an important
consideration for our Chief Finance Officer!"
----------
"With the company changing so rapidly it was
important to make sure that our existing people
still identified with our business and our goals"
STUART GREEN CHIEF TECHNICAL OFFICER
----------
Stuart also points out the nature of the company's markets that
are generally made up of larger corporations within the media
world. The sales process was initially slower than the company
anticipated due to the way large corporations work.
"For us", Stuart says, "it's a case of keeping everybody on board.
There's so much changing that we have to make sure everyone's
kept involved and informed, whether they are existing employees
or clients. We're having to reacquaint people with the business
all the time."
Top tips:
- Sales don't always happen as fast as you expect. Be realistic
with your goals and plan your finances accordingly.
- Even when you're recruiting heavily take care to choose people
who'll fit in. It's important to maintain your chemistry.
- Rapid growth can mean rapid change. You need to reacquaint
your customers and employees with your company all the time.
THE LAST WORD
Stuart comments: "Rapid growth doesn't automatically equal
success. You still have to make money and that takes strong
financial management."
