Help

maggiebt4 - 04 Dec 2005 14:58

Could anyone advise a book/ programme that would help me read graphs I am new to this and need all the help I can get.

Ive never wasted any of my time reading about chart analysis, and done reasonably well with my investments. Only God can look at a chart and tell you where it is going next. To me research and the fundamentals of a company are much more important. BUT we all have to find our own ways of doing things and if it works for you then good luck.

You can't leave it at that, Kivver! Which book did God learn from? It sounds like a belter! Or who's His broker? Can I get the same tips?
(Please don't be offended, folks - it's tongue in cheek).
I don't personally trust the charts. I have seen the same poster recently post very similar charts on two companies. On one he was suggesting the chart indicated the bottoming out of the sp - buy. On the other he was suggesting the chart indicated an irreversable downward trend that signified disaster - sell. I think charts tend to confirm your own bias because you can read into them whatever you choose!!
I simply start from the question of - "which shops are full, which products are people buying and what is the main topic of conversation in the pub / playground"?
It has worked for me, but everyone finds their own way eventually. It's just that it can be an expensive learning curve.
(Oh, and believe about 2% of what you read on here!!) 8-)

Alright i'll tell u it was Technical Analyisis for Dummies by Barbara Rockefeller at about 16 but he's the only one that has fully understood. Apparently Babara has also made a fortune..............from selleng her book.

Since Parity (pty) is in our thoughts, it would be nice if a chart reading expert could suggest where that is going next.

From the chart alone (though I am amatuer in the extreme) I would suggest south. But thats the point, surely. From the chart you could infer another false dawn and a continuation of a 2 year+ downward spiral, or a complete re-jig of the company and a sudden resurgence in confidence that a return to higher sp's is the order of the day.
Not in this one and I have no idea why the recent spike, but the trend lines others use would say it will fall away just as quickly as before.

Thanks very much all of you for the advise and the crack.
Have just had my fingers burned with LGB before I realised that I should only believe about 2% of what's written on BBs
So think I need to develop my research skills so that I can DYOR
I'll probably need God's help to read the charts but I'll give it a go

Maggie ,charting is quite complicated , however another good read is Head and Shoulders Tops by David Schwartz and Robin Griffiths ,it's fairly basic and easy to understand ,,,,,,if you want to believe more than 2% of what you read on BB's go to the NOWT thread,, it's all 100% true ..

Kivver - 05 Dec 2005 14:05 - 12 of 16

look at pty chart today, all the chart tech analysis in the world wouldnt have worked that out. Now the news that someone had bought 31 million shares might have had something to with it!

Maggiebt4, if you modify your profile at the top of the page to allow contact via MoneyAM post box I will send you a few pages on combining TA and Fundamentals. I am still organising this for myself and daughters. Fairly simple and not yet finished but it may keep you out of too much trouble and the principles have improved my returns. (That is until to-morrow.)

Fundamentals also have their problems and even with them you are predicting on yesterday's knowledge and being dependant on the honesty of the company presenting the news. (Would you trust a government led by a Spiv. the same attiude can be applied to companies and their news presentations.)

maggiebt4 - 06 Dec 2005 22:17 - 14 of 16

Fred1new, Think I've amended my profile to enable you to send me pages.
Hope so. Many thanks for your help.
