Pep's teams - Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Manchester City - have very good players who work hard/effectively but they are vulnerable to the counter attack. To reduce the risk they will prevent the opposition from breaking by any means, fair or foul. This is where the referee can influence the game; giving free kicks but not yellows makes the tactic effective - the initial job is done and the players can continue. Knowing you can stop the opposition's main threat - the break - also allows more players to be pushed forward. Oliver was accommodating; obvious examples being Jesus and Sterling when Martial was breaking - no attempt to play the ball. Have a look at the difference when the referee won't put up with it. On another note, Oliver also missed dives by Jesus and Walker. Hopefully the ref is on the case when Manchester City face Spurs.
Not the best idea expecting negative pole - Lukaku - to attract negative pole (the ball), mind Rooney was also more miss than hit regarding controlling a long ball and holding on to it. Ibra (not match fit) and Fellaini (injured) are much better for that job. Lukaku is more about through balls, which is why Pogba is a big miss for him in particular.

You won the bloody league last year and all the English did and should reach the knockout stages of the CL. As for the Mickey Mouse Cup ... PL reserve team tournament.

Reports: Everton deal for Walcott close
Lyndon Lloyd Tuesday 16 January 2018 174 Comments [Jump to last]
Looks like the next stage to complete the EFC retirement home is nearing it's completion.
Best comment . ..."Can he play left back"
Everton look set to make their second big-money signing of the month this week with a deal for Theo Walcott close according to reports.
Paul Joyce of The Times, routinely a reliable source once moves reach this point, has tweeted that a £20m transfer of the 28-year-old forward from Arsenal is in the final stages of negotiations following talks between the two clubs yesterday.
That followed a piece by the similarly reliable Andy Hunter of The Guardian who said that the Blues had made progress on a deal and were hopeful of concluding the switch this week.
And now there are reports that the England international has travelled to Finch Farm to discuss the transfer and undergo a medical.
Walcott has yet to start a Premier League game for the Gunners this season and with the 2018 World Cup on the horizon is on the lookout for a new opportunity that would guarantee him more game time.
A move to either Goodison Park or St Mary's Stadium in Southampton has been mooted since the transfer window opened — Sam Allardyce confirmed his interest in signing the player last Friday — but the Blues' willingness to match the player's £110,000 wages and stump up Arsenal's asking price looks to have given them the edge.

1 Posted 16/01/2018 at 06:11:56 Good news (I think). However, I have to ask myself, how desperate must an Arsenal player be to want to move to Everton at this time??

Cardiff v Man City next round of cup.
Can only ever remember playing them three times in Cardiff.
1983/84 August bank holiday and we had just been promoted from old Div 3 and they had been relegated from old Div 1. Went a goal down but came back to win 2-1 both goals from our full back Bodin ... the idiot who missed a pen for Wales v Rumania in 1993 and cost a trip to the WC in the USA.
About 1995 , FA Cup and we were in 3rd tier and they were in top tier and we won with a cracking goal from Nathan Blake.
August 2013 and our first home game after being promoted to the Premier League. Won a cracking match 3-2 and was probably the highlight of a bloody awful season for us.
Now we get the chance to roll them over again !

Walcott seals Blues move
Lyndon Lloyd Wednesday 17 January 2018 136 Comments [Jump to last]
Theo Walcott has completed his move from Arsenal to Everton in a reported £20m deal, becoming the Blues' second signing so far in the current transfer window.
The 28-year-old follows Turkish striker Cenk Tosun through the door as manager, Sam Allardyce, and director of football, Steve Walsh, look to strengthen a forward line that has struggled to put shots on target let alone score goals in recent matches.
Everton beat off competition from Walcott's former club Southampton to secure the England international's signature on a 3½-year contract and take their spending for January past the £40m mark. He will wear the No.11 jersey vacated by Kevin Mirallas who joined Olympiakos on loan earlier this month.
Despite scoring 19 goals in all competitions last season, Walcott had become a peripheral figure at the Emirates Stadium and hadn't started a Premier League game under Arsene Wenger since April last year.
He no doubt views his move to Goodison Park as a fresh start where he could put himself back into the mind of England manager Gareth Southgate ahead of the World Cup in Russia this summer.
He joined Arsenal in January 2006 for £5m and has since earned 47 England caps but wasn't selected for Euro2016 and has since been overlooked by Southgate.
In all, Walcott made 270 Premier League appearances for Arsenal, scoring 65 goals and providing 43 assists, having scored 4 times in 21 games for the Saints with whom he started his professional career in 2005.
“I've come to Everton because I'm very ambitious and I want the club to push to the next level," Walcott said upon signing. "I'm very excited to be starting a new chapter and felt this was the right place for me to be.
“The fact there's a new stadium going to be developing in the next few years, it's exciting times for Everton Football Club.
“I'm dead excited and I just want to do what I do best which is playing football and expressing myself because I'm excited again, I really am.
“I do really believe that I'm going to give it my all, which is what I always have done, and this place is going to get even more out of me.
“There's something about this move which I've just felt good about."

Because he dived , he was still on his feet after he hurdled his leg then decided to fall over. His second movement was unatural and not caused by the tackle imo and apparently that of the VAR.
