MIDAS UPDATE: Investors gain 138% as Mulberry shines There are not many similarities between Dunelm and Mulberry. One focuses on value, the other on affordable luxury. But it appears that consumers are interested in both.

Midas recommended the retailer, which sells clothes and leather goods, in early June, suggesting the shares should do well long term because the brand has a real appeal in places such as China and Brazil, where the numbers of wealthy people are growing rapidly.

But it seems as if the British cannot get enough of Mulberry either. Last Thursday, the company said sales in the ten weeks to October 2 were up 57% compared with last year. The group also revealed it had sold more full-price items than last year and had seen a surge in wholesale demand.

As a result, chairman Godfrey Davis hopes that profits for the year to March 2011 will significantly exceed market expectations.

Brokers responded by upgrading their forecasts, not just for next year but for the following two years as well. Before last week, they predicted pre-tax profits of 9.7m, 13.2m and 17m for 2011, 2012 and 2013 respectively.

Those figures have now been increased to 13m, 18m and 22m.

Midas verdict: Mulberry was trading at 206p in June. Since then, the price has risen by 138% to 490p. This is an extraordinary performance in such a short term and begs the question - what should investors do now?

Supporters of this company believe it has real potential, so the price may well rise further, but the recent increase is eyecatching. Sell 50% to 70% to lock in some profit and keep the rest in case the stock continues to provide rewards. And bear in mind, investors receive a discount on Mulberry products.
