Carbonite doesn't back AVI files up by deffault but you can change that.

I think there is a fix MFT routine in the recovery console. What recovery program are you using?

Edit

I've just had a closer look at Carbonite, it seems that you can get it to backup video files but only on an individual file or per directory basis (not including subdiectories). I think there is a 2GB single file limit as well.

I used undelete_plus on my c:drive to recover those i'd deleted from there. On the sata disk, undelete won't work because the mft is not there.

Any suggestions for a good recovery program?

I have used Actice Undelete. You may be able to use the trial version to see what it can see on the disk but I think you will have to pay if you want to use it.

Struggling to connect a windows 2000 laptop to my router via a wired connection. Not too worried about a network setup, just want to update win 2000 then pass my laptop on tot a relative for internet access.

I'm in network and dial up connections, and all I can see is "Make new connection " and "Tiscali 2" which was the dial up connection I used to use. Clicking on make a new connection brings up a menu with
Dial up to private network
Dial up to the internet
Connect to a private network through the internet
Accept incoming connections
Connect directly to another computer.

I'm struggling to work this out. Any help?

Edit, I might just be getting somewhere. The laptop doesn't seem to be recognising its network adapter, trying a fix now

Edit 2. Not getting anywhere at all.

Edit 3. Will bring the OS disc home from work tomorrow and see if that helps.

Seymour - have you got SP4 loaded for Win2K ?

Also, what does Device Manager report about the NIC ?

Seymour Clearly - 02 Nov 2007 00:10 - 6282 of 11003

No, still only on SP1. This machine was hardly ever connected to t'internet

Device manager says it's working correctly.

Don't use the network connection wizzard.

There should be a local area Connection or similar name. First of all it has to be enabled. In network properties, right click and select properties, select TCP/IP and click the properties button. Select 'Obtain IP Address automatically' and 'Obtain DNS server address automatically' click OK then OK in the remaining box.

Assuming that your router is set up as a DHCP server, that should be it. But you need to open Internet Explorer, click Tools, Internet Options, Connections tab, select Never Dial a Connection then click OK.

Edit

Yo do need to upgrade to SP4 then install any recommended updates though this should not effect the network connection.

Seymour Clearly - 02 Nov 2007 07:36 - 6284 of 11003

That seems to be the problem. In "Network & Dial up connections" I have "Make new connection" and "Tiscali 2" which is the old dial-up connection. No sign of any LAN connection.

If I go into "Administrative tools / Add network components" I have an option to add
a) Networking Services. I can then add RIP listener and Simple TCP/IP services.
b) Other network file and print services, which gives print services for unix.

My guess is that a) might help. Is this the right route?

Anyway, will update you tonight. Busy day at work ahead now. Thanks for all the help.

If you are not going to use the Tiscali connection again, I suggest that you delete it for clarity.

I've just tested a Win 2K installation, the Local Area Connection will not appear in the network connections window until the network card is properly installed in device manager. Check device manager, theire should be a heading under Network Adapters and the ethernet adapter should be shown there. I uninstalled it and then reinstalled it and the connection immediately became live with the automatic setttings in Network connections.

If you've never had a network on that computer, then you may have to install some services. It will probably ask you for the disk, and do it automatically or you may have to add them to the Local Area Connection properties box.

Once you have it up and running, if you are not going to use Tiscali dailup anymore, download the IE6 setup file from microsoft, uninstall any Tiscali software, uninstall IE6 then reinstall IE6 from the MS file. IMO Tiscali is a nasty bit of software.

Thanks Optimist. I think you may have hit the nail on the head. Have never had it networked. Will sort it out tonight.

foale - 02 Nov 2007 12:29 - 6287 of 11003

well new ide drive arrived today...forgetting the other one atm...Need to install this....

it says on the drive itself...go to BIOS select auto detect and enable logical block ...LBA..then reboot...
I could not find this

and on f1 on a reboot its say on the windows install disc...cant find any hard drives...not my week....

Dishwasher and fridge broke this week also..is that relevant :-)

Seymour Clearly - 02 Nov 2007 12:34 - 6288 of 11003

Spellcheck looks to be broken as well. Just not your week is it?

BTW have you cleaned all the dust out of the machine. There's usually loads lurking there. Don't think this will help but worth doing anyway.

foale - 02 Nov 2007 13:21 - 6289 of 11003

spell check fixed...PC interior now spotless,,,,and no cigar
nice blue screen though

Do I gather that you are doing a clean Win XP install on your new disk?

Is the Disk a standard IDE or SATA?

How large is the new disk? How old is your Win XP setup disc?

foale - 02 Nov 2007 14:04 - 6291 of 11003

hi its IDE 160...win XP is a recovery disk...yes quite old

its to install windows on it...as its brand new

foale - 02 Nov 2007 14:06 - 6292 of 11003

blue screen says ENTER to install XP...but the straight asawy says cant find...the HDD

foale - 02 Nov 2007 14:07 - 6293 of 11003

the HDD did saysomething about select auto detect in BIOS and enable LBA...could not see where that was

Optimist - 02 Nov 2007 14:39 - 6294 of 11003

I think the problem is that you must use a post SP2 installation CD for a large HDD.

If your disk is pre SP2, you need get hold of an SP2 instalation disk or create your own. Let me know if you need to do that and I'll try to find the instructions.

foale - 02 Nov 2007 14:48 - 6295 of 11003

it is SP1
...recovery

foale - 02 Nov 2007 14:50 - 6296 of 11003

how do I do that with my SP Pro service pack 1 CD
