Well I'm long from yesterday and I've been adding as it's been rising. Can't decide whether to cut and run into a rally or hold and add more. Decisions, decisions.

Paulismyname - 05 Mar 2004 15:15 - 643 of 11056

I know this is a dumb question but you have got to start somewhere...

Hilary when they say you are long/short on the cables what does that mean...

(stupid question over from someone who has never traded currencies)

hilary - 05 Mar 2004 15:24 - 644 of 11056

Beebs,

It's designed to lull you into a false sense of security.

Paul,

The Cable is the GBP/USD cross. Being long means that you've bought the GBP/sold the USD and want it to go up. Vice versa being short.

Paulismyname - 05 Mar 2004 15:32 - 645 of 11056

Hilary, thanks

Will start to follow this thread but know very little about currency trading apart from the fact I follow the cables because it impacts on some divi equities and hedge funds priced in dollars (most of them)

MightyMicro - 05 Mar 2004 16:18 - 646 of 11056

Paul: Also, Cable -- and other crosses -- affect UK corporate profitability in ways that are hard to predict. This has all the usual knock-ons. There is a myth, perpetrated by popular financial commentators, that a strong pound "makes our goods more expensive abroad, particularly in the American market". Complete rubbish. If you deal with corporate America, you price in dollars and stick to it, and take your lumps on Cable. Otherwise the American competition gets the sale.

Beeblebrox - 05 Mar 2004 16:37 - 647 of 11056

'scuse me girlie, need my address ?

'twas a bit tight there for a while though,

have a good w/e,and play tennis as well as you played cable

lol
