How to profit from Betting Exchanges (BEX)

How would you like to trade a market where you get large regular price swings every 10 minutes in the afternoon, seven days a week. A
market where all prices are set purely by supply and demand, few transaction costs, no middle men and you only pay commission if you win? Where you can freely act as a market maker and where you have direct market access and where you can create a spread for others to take?

Betfair has revolutionised the betting market and created an open platform for exchanging risk on sports events. This market is now viewed much more like a traditional financial risk market than an old fashioned betting market. Smart users have realised that there are huge opportunities on Betfair because they can buy and sell risk in much the same way they would in a normal financial market but without the burden of cost or the restricted access that is usually associated with traditional financial markets.

Back for 10 seconds and then gone again

Interesting having the volume chart - shows clearly nothing go through

Scripophilist - 30 Nov 2005 13:32 - 6335 of 10502

I have a very big exposure on the 13:30, In the lap of the gods now.

Listening to the commentary and praying!

Fundamentalist - 30 Nov 2005 13:33 - 6338 of 10502

which horse scrip?

sealed - 30 Nov 2005 13:33 - 6339 of 10502

Sites running like a donkey. I see the 1:20 never went in play. Ticked off quite a few punters on the forum, until that crashed as well. ;~)

Either Gangster are us or Edelff is OK, anything else is bad news.

WOODIE - 30 Nov 2005 13:37 - 6341 of 10502

not again ? its a joke

Fundamentalist - 30 Nov 2005 13:37 - 6342 of 10502

unlucky scrip

Fundamentalist - 30 Nov 2005 13:38 - 6343 of 10502

hope it wasnt too big an exposure - even harder to take when with half the race left you had 2 of 3 remaining standing on your side

Scripophilist - 30 Nov 2005 13:38 - 6344 of 10502

Fortunately the least liability! Would have been a mini disaster if Northern Minster would have come in. Still not sure what the final result will be till the site comes back up.

Scripophilist - 30 Nov 2005 13:40 - 6345 of 10502

Was one of the best cards for me for the day. Bit of a mare really isn't it. Personally I think they should void any crash affected races.

Never realised before how far behind ladcrooks radio commentary was - having left it on when i left the room and came back i noticed how behind ATR it was - are all the radio commentaries the same

I agree with you but ultimately that is a pro trader view and against the pure punter. What about the poor guy whos had a lumpy bet on the winner but doesnt get paid because the site crashed just before the race. And where do you draw the line - what if the site crashes 2f from home - do you still void all

(just playing devils advocate)

Scripophilist - 30 Nov 2005 13:46 - 6348 of 10502

They won't settle the card now, so I am stuffed. My balance has shrunk while the decide what to do! Not that I would want to trade for the moment anyhow. Will have to wait and see.

I did get a hint of the crash about a minute before it happened. I have been testing again this afternoon and it threw a wobbler for a few seconds. So maybe I should have bothered after seeing that.

WOODIE - 30 Nov 2005 13:47 - 6349 of 10502

william hill racing is approx 40 sec behind tote radio is sometimes a full min behind

Scripophilist - 30 Nov 2005 13:47 - 6350 of 10502

Fundy, I know what you are saying. If Gangsters R us would have won, I wouldn't have complained. But I think they need to have a hard and fast rule. I am limbo at the moment.

WOODIE - 30 Nov 2005 13:48 - 6351 of 10502

its back at last

Scripophilist - 30 Nov 2005 13:49 - 6352 of 10502

I've been looking at the matched bets and time and depending on their ruling on this I could still get a massive spanking. Some money was match a split second before the race got underway so depending on how they interpret the data it could be anywhere.

ive been hit a couple of times before with this, once losing what id made in the whole week, however i dont see anything changing so have come to accept it as an "occupational hazard" albeit a frustrating and expensive one at times.

Because people trade differently (ie some wait to lay off in running) it is very hard for them to draw the line but the rule does need to be clearer.

Also, do they need different rules for different sports - where do you draw the line for example if the site crashes during a 5 day test match?

Funny thing with that race was just before it crashed someone put up 3.95 on the fav (it had been 3.5/3.55) and i would have taken it if i wasnt worried about the site
