How to profit from Betting Exchanges (BEX)

How would you like to trade a market where you get large regular price swings every 10 minutes in the afternoon, seven days a week. A
market where all prices are set purely by supply and demand, few transaction costs, no middle men and you only pay commission if you win? Where you can freely act as a market maker and where you have direct market access and where you can create a spread for others to take?

Betfair has revolutionised the betting market and created an open platform for exchanging risk on sports events. This market is now viewed much more like a traditional financial risk market than an old fashioned betting market. Smart users have realised that there are huge opportunities on Betfair because they can buy and sell risk in much the same way they would in a normal financial market but without the burden of cost or the restricted access that is usually associated with traditional financial markets.

"Hope to lay Miss S.Williams later"

Careful your wife does not hear you say that.

chartist2004 - 21 Jan 2005 22:25 - 643 of 10502

LOL; I had an early night, gave her the night off!!

Anyone on Sheffield/Port Vale game? I had a result, layed the draw @ 4.0 15 seconds before Sheffield scored, then backed the draw @ 32.0 to green up 2 mins from the bell :o) Also up on the dogs/ftse/dow. Getting to grips with Betfair trading (sorry betting)!

Fitting a new front door for an old dear tomorrow, so have a break from the screens.
Have a good weekend all bfn....

Scripophilist - 21 Jan 2005 22:33 - 644 of 10502

I was on the match as well. Did just fine out of it. Quite a nice match actually Sheff Wed dominated in terms of actually play (More about that during the course). Some good matches tomorrow. I am testing a new mobile betting solution and will be out and about so will put it to use tommorow. Lets hope it doesn't crash!!

Harlosh - 22 Jan 2005 17:36 - 645 of 10502

Just back from a few days in the snow in my ancestral home, northern Scotland. Hope I haven't missed too much.

Would be very interested in the mobile solution you are looking at Scrip. In the summer I spend a lot of time in the Lakes so sounds as though I could have the best of both worlds.

Scripophilist - 22 Jan 2005 20:04 - 646 of 10502

It worked well today. Actually there are two in place. I may uprade to 3G so I can get streaming commentary as well!!

Was an excellent day. I might take next week off!!

Harlosh - 22 Jan 2005 20:10 - 647 of 10502

When you work for yourself Scrip, you don't get paid if you don't work. I bet you wouldn't be able to resist!!

Scripophilist - 23 Jan 2005 22:16 - 648 of 10502

Of course you are right, it ain't going to happen is it!! Proof in the pudding is the fact that I was on the Real Madrid vs Mallorca match this evening. I think there will be some good matches up this week. Watford vs Liverpool and Man U and Chelsea will be too good to resist. Plus all the other sports as well of course. I shall continue to make hay while the sun shines.

Pinsticker - 23 Jan 2005 22:25 - 649 of 10502

There was some really good money to be had with CBB this evening - Bez was 13.5 in a 2 horse race even after it became public knowledge that the final votes were at worst a 40/60 split against him.
That's what I call cracking value!

Scripophilist - 23 Jan 2005 22:40 - 650 of 10502

"Bez was 13.5 in a 2 horse race, that the final votes were at worst a 40/60 split against him"

Wow, You gotta be kidding. That is value. Maybe should have cast an eye over that. I'm always a little sceptical though that they say its close in order to generate more call volume and therefore revenue.

BTW, Some bookies stopped taking bets on CBB the other day due to "irregular" betting patterns.

chartist2004 - 23 Jan 2005 22:44 - 651 of 10502

Another good day for me backed Arsnal @ 1.54 and Real Madrid Layed Any unquoted @ 4.7, was releaved Real stopped at 3! A cracking 4 days pot up 787%! must bank some profit before I give it back. Got the door fitted also, back to work tomorrow for a rest!!
Cheers Mike...

Harlosh - 23 Jan 2005 22:47 - 652 of 10502

For some reason,I lost my nerve a bit tonight so didn't get on the Real game. Must have been those few days away from the screen. She can whistle next time she wants a short break me thinks.

Pinsticker - 23 Jan 2005 23:01 - 653 of 10502

Scrip,

I had some of that 13.5! I know what you are saying about the hype and would normally see it as an opportunity to take a contrary position at better value.
However, in this case, they simply announced the fact that the 3rd placed celeb was being evicted with 28% of the total vote - you then didn't need to be a mathematical genius to work out that 13.5 was tremendous value and could be taken in a very leisurely way for the next 20 minutes!

OK in the sure and certain knowledge that this is a silly questions and will show how little I know about betting !

In the betfair daily up or down bet shouldnt the odd for Laying below 4803.3 (today) be the same as Backing 4803.3 and above?
