Israeli Gaza conflict?????? (GAZA)

Fred1new - 06 Jan 2009 19:21

Will this increase or decrease the likelihood of terrorist actions in America, Europe and the rest of the world?

If you were a member of a family murdered in this conflict, would you be seeking revenge?

Should Tzipi Livni and Ehud Olmert, be tried for war crimes if or when this conflict comes to an end?

What will the price of oil be in 4 weeks time?

UN Third Committee Votes For Palestinian Right To Self Determination

The General Assembly of the United Nations, Social, Humanitarian, & Cultural – Third Committee, voted Wednesday for a resolution acknowledging the Palestinian Right to Self Determination.

173 countries voted for the resolution while six countries (United States, Canada, Israel, Micronesia, The Marshall Islands and the Republic of Nauru) voted against, and three countries (Southern Sudan, Cameron and Honduras) abstained.

The new resolution affirms that Palestinian right to self determination, including the right to an independent state, and urges all countries, and all United Nations organizations and other related agencies, to continue to support the Palestinian people, and to help them achieve their internationally-guaranteed rights.

That will teach them
LOL

A number of orthodox Israeli members of Knesset (MK) stated that they will be burning a Palestinian flag in front of the United Nations office in occupied Jerusalem, in protest to UN’s approval of Palestine as a non-member state

cynic - 28 Nov 2012 19:14 - 6411 of 6906

for sure that was the right, and ultimately obvious result ...... it'll be interesting to see what's in the detail, and no doubt you will tell us all ...... however, i trust you won't start promoting the idea that israel will be dismantled or anything even approaching that

Haystack - 28 Nov 2012 20:08 - 6412 of 6906

That was not the actual vote. That vote is tomorrow.

Stan - 28 Nov 2012 21:31 - 6413 of 6906

What the hell has Europe got to do with Palestine? Please keep to the threads topic!

Fred1new - 28 Nov 2012 21:53 - 6414 of 6906

Sorry Dad,

Considered the impact of UK decision on voting.

Also, who was responsible for the Declarations!

Nul points.

With Palestinians near certain to win UN recognition, Israel increasingly isolated

At least 150 countries expected to vote in favor of recognizing Palestine as non-member observer state at General Assembly; U.S., Canada to vote with Israel against resolution, Germany to abstain.

A number of countries that said they would vote against are now backtracking and intending to abstain. The most important of these is Germany, which is normally a strong supporter of Israel. The US is now becoming concerned that a no vote puts them at odds with the Arab world . Perhaps they don't want to be on the wrong side of history.

A couple days ago nearly half of the European countries were expected to vote against the UN resolution. It now seems likely that no EU country will vote against. An Israeli official said, "we lost Europe".

Germany abstaining at UN because Israel wouldn't budge on settlements'

Senior official says Germany has been trying to help Israel on the Palestinian issue for a long time but Israel has not taken the necessary steps to advance the peace process; Italy also announces that it will support Palestinians at the UN.

The German decision not to oppose the Palestinian bid for non-member observer state status, and to abstain in the vote at the United Nations General Assembly this evening has shocked the top brass at the Foreign Ministry and the Prime Minister's office.

Stan - 29 Nov 2012 15:51 - 6419 of 6906

Well why does our lot not vote for them? What exactly is stopping them?

cynic - 29 Nov 2012 15:54 - 6420 of 6906

probably best to see what the vote actually brings and what the wording detail is ..... that will no doubt give a clue as why certain countries voted as they did ..... one of the items to look for is the pursuit or otherwise of certain people through ICC

Fred1new - 29 Nov 2012 15:54 - 6421 of 6906

vote?

Stan - 29 Nov 2012 15:58 - 6422 of 6906

Yes sorry "vote".

Haystack - 29 Nov 2012 16:09 - 6423 of 6906

The wording and details of the resolution are very tame. They just talk about self determination and 1967 borders. There is nothing contentious in them. As regards the use of the ICC, that is open to all members. If the Palestinians do not charge Israel retrospectively then all Israel has to do to avoid the ICC is to behave in a civilised way. Of course that means no more settlements as they are illegal and constitute a war crime in someone else's territory. The continued occupation of the West Bank is another war crime as is the stealing of Palestinian land. It does begin to sound that Israel needs a change of direction.

cynic - 29 Nov 2012 16:13 - 6424 of 6906

following the initial euphoria, it should not be forgotten that it takes two to tango and there are many hard years ahead - or just several if one is very lucky

Haystack - 29 Nov 2012 16:15 - 6425 of 6906

It looks like the session which will lead to the vote should start at 8pm our time. It can be watched live on the UN web site. The number of countries voting against is getting very small now. The US, Canada, The Marshal Islands, maybe Denmark but they may abstain. China and Russia should be a yes. I would surprised if they get ten to vote no out of 193.

cynic - 29 Nov 2012 16:17 - 6426 of 6906

i'm a celebrity will make better watching, or even corrie or eastenders

Stan - 29 Nov 2012 16:17 - 6427 of 6906

So what's stopping us voting for then?

cynic - 29 Nov 2012 16:19 - 6428 of 6906

perhaps we (uk) will vote "for" depending on what deals may have been done behind the scenes
