Bookmakers are today expecting the Victoria Pendleton factor to help trigger a record-breaking hour of betting as 70,000 racegoers flocked to the final day of the Cheltenham Festival.

An estimated £65million was expected to be gambled on the Timico Gold Cup — the highlight of the meeting due off at 3.30pm — and the St James’s Place Foxhunter Chase, scheduled to start 40 minutes later and featuring the Olympic cycling champion.

“Pendleton is going to send punters potty,” David Williams, of Ladbrokes, said. “She’s going to cap off the biggest week of our year by providing the busiest hour we’ve known here. The idea of her winning is brilliant for racing but terrifying for our accountants.”

Bookmakers at Cheltenham were quoting Pendleton at evens to get round on Pacha Du Polder, a gelding trained by Paul Nicholls, the champion trainer.
