aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrgggggg
I am trying to save a file on win xp. The file is autorun.inf. No matter what I do it saves it as autorun.inf.txt because I created it with notepad.
Does anyone know how to rename this file. And, no, rename don't work. I can change it to autorun.inf.doc or autorun.inf.xls but not autorun.inf
BTW you can only tell it's got the .txt bit on the end when you look at it on a earlier version of windows.
Bloody MS.

Mike - open the relevant folder in Windows Explorer/My Computer. From the Tools menu choose Folder Options. On the View tab, clear the "Hide Extensions for Known File Types" (or similar) item. Choose Apply (and click the Apply to All Folders button if you want to change the behaviour throughout your system), then OK. The full filename will now be displayed and can be edited. To avoid the problem in future, change the "Save as Type" dropdown in the Notepad save dialog to All Files - this prevents the .txt being added.

Done it, had to download PFE and recreate it.
Surely there must be a simpler way?

Martini,
go to www.mozilla.org and just download your own preferences, for yourself-you will need to get Java and stuff but it leads you through the procedure like a dream, (and most of the time I am in one these days, so it has to be easy if I can do it),
really good stuff.
cheers

ps after I has sweated over a hot PC for two days trying to sort Explorer,
my 19 year old cheerfully told me she had used mozilla at school for ages, i love her really, I think

hawkeye - probably smtp.ntlworld.com, should be the same as whatever is in your email program's outgoing mail server/SMTP server entry.

Does anyone know if its ok to load excel and word from 98SE on to a m/c that has XP? I think my old m/c is indicating to me that it wants to retire and I would like excel and word on my No.1 m/c but don't want to splash out unnecessarily on Office XP SB.
Thanks

Rob, do you mean that you want to install MS office 97 from the disc that you used to load it onto your 98SE PC? If so the answer is yes, no problem.

I upgraded the motherboard on the PC to an AOpen AK79G-1394 capable of using faster memory, later processor etc. Using Xp professional as a clean install on a new drive. Installed motherboard drivers and everything was OK.
Obtained the service pack 1 from microsoft and relevent updates, installed them and now the onboard sound doesn't work. Uninstalled and reinstalled the motherboard drivers, still no sound. Device Manager says everything is working and properly installed. The only clue seems to be that in Sound and Audio Devices it states that there is no audio device!, item is greyed out.
I have obtained the latest bios for the motherboard from the net.
This seems to be a conflict between Xp SP1 and the motherboard since the speakers were working when originally installed.
I would be most grateful for any suggestions.
