TP,

I have no trouble linking up to the connection with the password given, it just won't connect to the internet. (See Following).

Kayak,

Trying to connect via wireless and I am sure the problem is as you state, IE it won't connect with the IP address automatically. Not sure what I do to rectify that but will have a go. Will update asap.

Thanks very much to both.

Hi guys

Just a quick question with regards to Vista. Can anyone tell me where I can find what MS Office programs (versions) are compatible with Vista. Ive tried looking on Microsofts website but with no joy.

It appears the version of Outlook I have isnt compatible and Im concerned the same may then be the case for excel, access and word (tho they seem to be running ok currently). The version of MS Office I have is XP Pro (2002)

HARRYCAT - 14 Jan 2008 20:13 - 6484 of 11003

If you go to the JAVA site, their version of Office works with Vista. It's free & almost exactly the same as Microsoft Office. I have installed it & works with VISTA Home Basic.

My email attachments have stopped opening but I can save them to my documents and open them from there, has anyone any idea why they won't open.

TIA

mega,
there is a free program called Knoppix(after the developer) that you
can download for free and copy to disc. This apparently allows you to
boot up Linux on any computer as well as the exiting OS and troubleshoot.
Do a Google on linux and there are lots of versions to download or for a few
dollars get a CD by post.

Some advice please, just had a phone call from my eldest lad saying his computer has a message on it from Microsoft saying they have picked up his xp OS as being a pirate copy and politly asked for him to update to a legal copy, this is the tricky question and are there websites that could provide a code so that the message from Microsoft goes away so that one does not have to part with the folding stuff :-)

Rick.........

Optimist - 17 Jan 2008 13:38 - 6490 of 11003

If it's a genuine copy of XP, he should phone Microsoft and get it sorted.

If he is using a pirate copy, there may well be fixes to hide the message or even more recent copies of the OS but the system has to pass the Genuine Microsoft validation test in order to receive updates. If he doesn't keep up to date with the service packs and security updates then he has a potentially very insecure system

Mega,

May I suggest that you Google what you're looking for?

Mega Bucks - 17 Jan 2008 15:21 - 6492 of 11003

Ladies and gents and Hils :-) good advice and even better that google keyword :-))

Bolshi - 17 Jan 2008 15:38 - 6493 of 11003

I noticed that the last time I did a Windows XP update (Monday I think) that the update was Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130). Perhaps they've got a few new tricks up their sleeve?

Mega Bucks - 17 Jan 2008 15:44 - 6494 of 11003

Bolshi i am certain thats what it was,of course we had no idea that it was not a valid copy :-) so we are taking certain steps that it never happens again !!!

Forgot to say that idea that Hils suggested works a treat :-))

Optimist - 17 Jan 2008 15:51 - 6495 of 11003

Just to test how open Microsoft are I tried Hilary's search words in their search engine. It came up with similar results.

The Publisher and Kayak,
Re post 6468. Unable to connect to internet via a wireless connection when away from home.
Thanks for your replies. Finally sorted it via Kayak's suggestion re 'obtain an IP address automatically' and 'obtain DNS server address automatically' are both ticked.
If ever your in god's country (Yorkshire) I owe you a half pint. Don't you believe the tales of our generosity, we are a tight fisted lot really.
But seriously, much obliged.
Greek.

ThePublisher - 18 Jan 2008 09:27 - 6497 of 11003

Greek,

Now there's a fine offer.

Altho' I live in SW6 these days I was born and bred in Yorkshire.

Sunk more pints of Hull Brewery than I care to think.

But hadn't realised you had internet up there :)

TP

greekman - 18 Jan 2008 09:32 - 6498 of 11003

OK, I will make it a pint as it's not worth coming that far for a half.

Cheers Greek.

Kayak - 18 Jan 2008 09:36 - 6499 of 11003

Thanks Greek :)

jeffmack - 18 Jan 2008 10:50 - 6500 of 11003

Maybe that will work for me. I have a Belkin Router/Modem and I am having a problem connecting to the Internet.

Sometimes when I access the Router it is showing as connected but the World is not illuminated on the Router to show connection to the internet. Also the ADSL sign on the router keeps dropping. Pipex tested the line and said it was OK.

The router has been powered off many times and no settings have been changed.

Any ideas

Optimist - 18 Jan 2008 11:15 - 6501 of 11003

Jeffmack

Check the ADSL connection settings on your router. On most Belkin routers there is a Dial on demand check box. Make sure that this is unchecked.
