John McDonnell signed letter calling for MI5 and armed police to be disbanded
Labour's shadow chancellor claimed he had not seen or signed the controversial missive, but a picture has emerged of him holding the list of demands

John McDonnell, Labour's shadow chancellor, called for MI5 and the UK's armed police force to be scrapped in a controversial campaign letter.
A picture has emerged showing Mr McDonnell holding the letter earlier this year, despite claims that he had never seen or signed it.
It demands that special police squads - like those that hunt terror suspects - be disbanded, as well as the Monarchy and the House of Lords.


The letter, organised by The Socialist Network as part of their “Socialist Campaign For a Labour Victory” was also signed by a group of Labour-supporting unions.


Mr McDonnell was present at the meeting where the demands were drawn up, despite claims made by his spokesman that he had not seen the letter.
In a tweet accompanying a picture of him holding the list of demands Labour's shadow chancellor said the campaign: "Is important for ensuring a clear program of socialist demands on a Labour government".

Mr McDonnell's support for disbanding the police came as David Cameron criticised Labour's leader Mr Corbyn for his criticism of the shoot-to-kill policy.
He said: "Has it not come to something when the Leader of Her Majesty’s Opposition is not sure what the police’s reaction should be when they are confronted by a Kalashnikov-waving terrorist?”
Labour MPs responded to the letter with fury, with one telling the Sun: "We are about half an inch away from meltdown".

The letter also called for deportation of failed migrants to be scrapped, an end to tuition fees, high taxes for "the rich", "free abortion on demand", big cuts to military spending and Trident to be scrapped.

Re CC's post 64916. There are a few Labour MP's, unfortunately in very prominent, decision making positions who appear to be a danger to the UK. If the party is not careful these numbers will rise at the behest of their union paymasters.

A 1,111 carat "high quality diamond" has been discovered at a mine in Botswana, said to be the biggest find in more than a century, according to the mine company.

The gem, only second in size to the Cullinan diamond which was unearthered in South Africa in 1905, was mined by Lucara Diamond Corp.


"The magnificent stone, which originated from the south lobe of Lucara's Karowe Mine, is the world second largest gem quality diamond ever recovered and largest ever to be recovered through a modern processing facility," the Stockholm listed company said a statement.


The stone is yet to be evaluated, but commodities and mining analyst Kieron Hodgson, said it has "the potential to be one very expensive diamond."

"Valuation will depend on potential inclusions, how it would behave in cutting, optimal shape as well as final colour," he told AFP.

"All these things will need to be evaluated prior to bidding."

The biggest diamond discovered is the 3,106-carat Cullinan, found near Pretoria in South Africa in 1905.

It was cut to form the Great Star of Africa and the Lesser Star of Africa, which are set in the Crown Jewels of Britain.

Lucara indicated on its website that the Karowe Mine had also this week turned up further finds -- an 813 carat stone and a 374 carat stone, prompting Lamb to laud "an amazing week" for the company.

Corbyn and the activists and unions appetite for him are the death throws of the hard left. His imminent demise will put the left back in the box for a generation or more.

The Conservatives are giving him an easy ride. They are looking forward to his being leader at the 2020 GE. Unfortunately, the more sensible members of Labour have other ideas. The betting is on him leaving next year. You can get 11/1 on his leaving this year, but if falls to 2/1 next year and then the odds go up again.

If the Conservatives wanted him out soon they would be leaning on him much harder. He is pretty unstable at the moment and dramatically increased pressure would push him over the edge. He is looking older by the day. If he leaves it too long it is going to be a case of mental exhaustion or a breakdown. I remember in his first days as leader, Sky were following him down the street near the Commons to ask questions and he kept muttering, "someone is bothering me".

Surely it's not beyond the means of the PLP to engineer a return of the lesser spotted Millibandus via a nice safe seat?

If he wants to be, Corbyn will still be leading the Labour party at the next election.

I doubt that Cameron will be leader of the Con Party at that point.

But I can see on the table a deal between labour, SNP and Lib/dems with a few Labour right wingers joining the neo-con party.
