THE TALK TO YOURSELF THREAD. (NOWT)

goldfinger - 09 Jun 2005 12:25

Thought Id start this one going because its rather dead on this board at the moment and I suppose all my usual muckers are either at the Stella tennis event watching Dim Tim (lose again) or at Henly Regatta eating cucumber sandwiches (they wish,...NOT).

Anyway please feel free to just talk to yourself blast away and let it go on any company or subject you wish. Just wish Id thought of this one before.

cheers GF.

You have to remember the lefties are very defensive these days. They are aware that we are witnessing the death throws and last gasps of the left.

Stop being evasive H/S and answer the questions.

There is a lot of guesswork and admitted speculation in that article. I wouldn't take it too seriously.

Stan - 30 Nov 2015 00:09 - 65555 of 81564

OK you can go to bed now, but I expect the questions to be answered tomorrow.

Activist group linked to Jeremy Corbyn has accounts closed amid fears it may be funding terrorism

Co-op Bank said that Palestine Solidarity Campaign's accounts failed due diligence checks to ensure funds were not 'inadvertently funding illegal or other proscribed activities'

By Camilla Turner

7:30PM GMT 29 Nov 2015

An activist organisation which has Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn as patron has had its accounts closed down over fears that it may be inadvertently funding terrorism.

Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC), whose patrons also include the Oscar winning actress Julie Christie and the playwright Caryl Churchill, was told by the Co-operative Bank that “risk-appetite” was the reason for closing its account.

In a statement, the bank said that due to the “high risk” locations in which PSC operates and send funds to, it had to carry out “advanced due diligence checks” on their accounts to ensure that funds do not “inadvertently fund illegal or other proscribed activities”.

The statement concluded that it was “not possible to complete these checks to our satisfaction and the decision to close a number of accounts, including the PSC and some of its affiliates, is an inevitable result of this process”.

Mr Corbyn has long supported various Palestinian causes, including the PSC which says on its website that he “regularly speaks at rallies” and praises him for being "tireless in his support for Palestine".

The organisation has courted controversy in the past. A PSC meeting in 2004, following the assassination of Hamas leader Sheikh Yassin, led to Baroness Jenny Tonge being sacked from the Liberal Democrat party's front bench for claiming that in different circumstances, she might consider becoming a suicide bomber.

She went on to hold a minute's silence in Yassin's memory at the meeting, which was also attended by Mr Corbyn who claimed he left before the minute’s silence took place.

Mr Corbyn has been criticised for introducing members of Hamas and Hizbollah – terrorist bodies according to the United States – as “friends”. He says this was “diplomatic language in the context of dialogue”.

In February 2013, Mr Corbyn and his wife travelled to Gaza thanks to a £2,800 gift from Interpal, a British charity banned by the US government as “part of the funding network of Hamas” and as a terrorist organisation in its own right.

Interpal is allowed to operate in the UK after claiming it has broken its links with Hamas, a claim accepted by the Charity Commission.

PSC has announced that it is now launching legal action against the Co-operative Bank on grounds of discrimination.

ITN solicitors, acting on behalf of PSC, state the bank failed "to provide any reasons for the closure of PSC’s account, which has been compounded by [their] failure to provide appropriate disclosure".

They claimed that the decision to close its accounts was based on PSC's belief in "Palestinian rights" and "the nationality or religion of the Palestinian people"and was therefore contrary to the Equality Act.

Sarah Colborne, PSC’s Director accused Co-op of "turning its back on its ethical principles" by closing down their accounts.

Tom Wilson, a resident associate fellow at the Henry Jackson Society, a think tank, said: "The Co-op has highlighted the due diligence that it must show regarding the accounts of groups operating in 'high risk locations', of which Gaza and the West Bank would certainly be included.

"Among the concerns a bank would have in these kinds of cases will likely be fears about funding reaching illegal, extremist or terrorist activities.

"The PSC claim that this is an act of discrimination seems particularly unconvincing given the support we’ve seen the Co-op give for the Palestinian campaign in the past."
