Fan on processor is working fine. Not too sure about the one in the PSU

Changing the PSU is a good idea. Does the machine stay on long enough to fully boot? I've known machines that shutdown during the initial checks because they couldn't cope with anything being pluged into the serial/USB ports.

Yes fully boots and updates avg then cuts out

If you hav a spare PSU, try that. It may also be worth swaping memory around to see if that is the cause.

It might be the hard drive but Ii think that is less likely. You could eliminate that by booting the machine from a live Linux CD.

Tks for yr assistance guys

I think problem was almost certainly processor fan after all.

It was stuffed with dust. After cleaning the pc ran for an hour or so without problems. I then switched it off, put covers back on etc. told my wife it was ok and five mins later it was off again. Then changed the fan with a bigger one from my spare, left cover off and it seems ok again

Excuse the stutter :-(

HARRYCAT - 04 Feb 2008 18:56 - 6565 of 11003

I can't remember exactly, but I seem to remember that processor fans are rated, so a fan that runs too fast will affect the processor function (i.e too cool). Might be worth checking that the replacement fan runs at the correct speed.

Optimist - 04 Feb 2008 19:38 - 6566 of 11003

If you have too much cooling, it may well be to noisy and could possibly use too much power but no way is overcooling going to upset the computer.

HARRYCAT - 04 Feb 2008 21:12 - 6567 of 11003

I stand corrected. Thanks.
Slow fan, unacceptable, rapid fan acceptable.

Can't post an answer on the Bugs thread, Is anyone else having this trouble please?

Bobcolby - 08 Feb 2008 18:26 - 6570 of 11003

PC still working fine. Guess it was definitely the fan overheating :-)

Stan - 11 Feb 2008 17:39 - 6571 of 11003

Can anyone point me to a freeware version of Excel please?

I only need it to do the simplest spreadsheet on my studio computer and it's certainly not worth buying another version of Office 2003 which is what is on this machine.

I can look at Geeks and things - but someone here may save me going down the wrong road and wasting time.
