Labour have been forced to cancel a phone canvassing event in support of Oldham by-election candidate Jim McMahon at their Brewers Green HQ tonight. The safety of those attending the scheduled “phonebank” at One Brewers Green could not be guaranteed because Stop the War are marching on it in protest at Corbyn’s decision to allow a free vote. Labour sources are understandably furious. Talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face…

btw, the tory MP on the tv this morning did not give any impression of other than a free vote, for he was inclined to vote against, but was still undecided

I have heard the Free vote discussed by Davis and others who said that they would probably vote against the "bombing" unless there was a more definite plan for action and the aftermath.

I think I recall one of the present cabinet saying it would be tory whipped vote.

One of the things which irritates me about the vote and decision to go to "WAR" is that the majority of the arguments on this thread and media is the concentration on devaluing Corbyn himself rather than defeating his argument.

It strikes me that Cameron and conspirators arguments are poor and smearing and denigrating others are attempts to divert attention from their own weak reasoning and "moral" positioning.

Other than for political playboys, going to war, killing innocent civilians and destroying a community is not a game and should not be treated so.

One pathetic argument, along the lines postured by Ken Livingstone, is that 'doing something to ISIL' will only make them 'do something back to us in retaliation'.

That's not how I see it.

ISIL are going to do their shit to us anyhow - is how I see it.

i can't really disagree with what you say about corbyn and the attacks on him
however, while i do not doubt his integrity, he is a sworn pacifist or certainly something close to it
nothing wrong with that per se, but it does mean that he lacks the open mind to take on board the counter argument, and therefore should not have tried his earlier coercion of the rest of the MPs

on the other side of the coin, all that you seem capable of posting are anti-cameron and anti-tory smears or snipes or anything else unpleasant you choose to dig up

for myself, i do not see cameron (and the tory party by implication) as a died-in-the-wool warmonger
in this specific, and as i have posted several times, i am prepared to accept that the correct course of action is indeed an extension of the bombing (and yes, i could be persuaded to change that by those with more knowledge than available on this board) albeit with considerable misgivings and concerns

A NEW poll has named former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher as the most influential woman of all time.

Mrs Thatcher was also voted the most influential woman in Scottish politics in 200 years.


But in Scotland overall, Marie Curie came in at number one in the overall spot with 29 per cent - with Mrs Thatcher being demoted to second place.





The survey of 2,000 respondents - conducted by Opinium on behalf of Scottish Widows - considered the women who have had the greatest influence across politics and world affairs, journalism and broadcasting, and science and technology. In the UK-wide poll Mrs Thatcher beat the Queen to be named as the most influential woman of all time.



Marie Curie was voted the most influential woman in science and technology from the past 200 years.

She was the first ever woman to teach at the esteemed Sorbonne institute in Paris, and received two Nobel Prizes – one for Physics in 1903 and a second for Chemistry in 1911.

Her research was vital in the development of x-rays in surgery. During World War One Curie helped to kit out ambulances with x-ray equipment, which she then drove herself as part of the war effort.

Also making the list is aviation trailblazer Amelia Earhart, who was named the most influential sportswomen.

Suzannah Lipscomb, historian and author, said: “To many people Marie Curie represents not only the first, but one of the most significant female scientists, one whose contribution has proved enduring and been recognised by the Nobel committee.

“I imagine that many women who have been most influential in science and technology don’t have name recognition – their work has gone unrecognised, under the radar.”

Also making the Scottish list was Rosa Parks - who 60-years-ago today refused to give up her seat on an Alabama bus to a young, white male.

She was subsequently arrested, due to the Jim Crow segregation laws in the South. This is widely regarded as one of the main triggers for the Civil Rights movement in America.


Emmeline Pankhurst, one of the figureheads of the Sufragette movement, also made the list - perhaps in association with the popularity of the new Suffragette film.
