THE TALK TO YOURSELF THREAD. (NOWT)

goldfinger - 09 Jun 2005 12:25

Thought Id start this one going because its rather dead on this board at the moment and I suppose all my usual muckers are either at the Stella tennis event watching Dim Tim (lose again) or at Henly Regatta eating cucumber sandwiches (they wish,...NOT).

Anyway please feel free to just talk to yourself blast away and let it go on any company or subject you wish. Just wish Id thought of this one before.

cheers GF.

A NEW poll has named former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher as the most influential woman of all time.

Mrs Thatcher was also voted the most influential woman in Scottish politics in 200 years.

But in Scotland overall, Marie Curie came in at number one in the overall spot with 29 per cent - with Mrs Thatcher being demoted to second place.

The survey of 2,000 respondents - conducted by Opinium on behalf of Scottish Widows - considered the women who have had the greatest influence across politics and world affairs, journalism and broadcasting, and science and technology. In the UK-wide poll Mrs Thatcher beat the Queen to be named as the most influential woman of all time.

Marie Curie was voted the most influential woman in science and technology from the past 200 years.

She was the first ever woman to teach at the esteemed Sorbonne institute in Paris, and received two Nobel Prizes – one for Physics in 1903 and a second for Chemistry in 1911.

Her research was vital in the development of x-rays in surgery. During World War One Curie helped to kit out ambulances with x-ray equipment, which she then drove herself as part of the war effort.

Also making the list is aviation trailblazer Amelia Earhart, who was named the most influential sportswomen.

Suzannah Lipscomb, historian and author, said: “To many people Marie Curie represents not only the first, but one of the most significant female scientists, one whose contribution has proved enduring and been recognised by the Nobel committee.

“I imagine that many women who have been most influential in science and technology don’t have name recognition – their work has gone unrecognised, under the radar.”

Also making the Scottish list was Rosa Parks - who 60-years-ago today refused to give up her seat on an Alabama bus to a young, white male.

She was subsequently arrested, due to the Jim Crow segregation laws in the South. This is widely regarded as one of the main triggers for the Civil Rights movement in America.

Emmeline Pankhurst, one of the figureheads of the Sufragette movement, also made the list - perhaps in association with the popularity of the new Suffragette film.

So she should be !!!

Would have loved to see her facing Corbyn across the floor of the Commons. It would have been a short relationship prior to his nervous breakdown.

Kinnock became so terrified of her that in the en he couldn't look her in the eyes. He used to stare at the floor most of the time.

"It strikes me that Cameron and conspirators arguments are poor and smearing and denigrating others are attempts to divert attention from their own weak reasoning and "moral" positioning."

"on this thread only ......
i can't really disagree with what you say about corbyn and the attacks on him"

Lets also not forget trying to change the subject when you have lost the point.. Thatcher for instance.

Manuel,

"however, while i do not doubt his integrity, he is a sworn pacifist or certainly something close to it"

I am, as he states himself to be, anti-war and the use of unnecessary physical force, when or if possible. But, like him (from actual statements I have heard) would never rule it out. Many who knew me from earlier periods learnt that by experiences.

I have been aware of Corbyn for a while, but I have never paid much attention to him until he was elected leader of the Labour party, and before being directed to him by the current media and political anti-Corbyn agenda.

Cannot say I have heard him say a lot of what is being attributed to him by the media and idiots like Haze and other tribal members, as being actually muttered by him.

As far as me being scornful of Cameron, it is an attempt to counter false charges against Corbyn and his possible policies. Although, I have to admit many of the present tory ruling class clique of the present government irritate me and I see them as often being deliberately deceitful.

I don’t in general have the same opinion of all tories and certainly have doubts about the integrity of some members of the Labour and Liv/Dems etc.

Also, I think general deriding of all previous government policy and actions in general as a political weapon devalues democratic values and the individuals concern. It is perfectly reasonable to criticise previous actions, as long as the period of those actions and the intended goals are taken into consideration.

At present, I see the present government is an antipathy to what I would consider a supposedly elected government should be. It seems to be intent on governing for itself and the fellow privileged but not the “whole of a society”.

Syria, is complex and if involved I wouldn’t be able to tell my short termed friend from my long term enemy.

Sort that out first and then consider useful use of force.

The General Belgrano was an Argentine Navy cruiser which was controversially sunk by a British submarine during the 1982 Falklands War as she sailed away from the conflict zone. 323 people died, mainly young sea cadets.

Maggie Thatcher in the eyes of many was a War Criminal and guilty of murder and no better than ISIS terrorists.

Both having the madness to believe their actions justifiable.

Pick better heroines.

cynic - 01 Dec 2015 19:38 - 65710 of 81564

i don't have to sort out anything :-)
as in WW2, in times of crisis - and this is - my enemy's enemy is my friend

i would be very surprised if a deal was not struck with the russkies as it suits both sides

=======

btw, i don't think that any uk gov't is or has been especially self-seeking, though inevitably, for such is the game of politics, the ultimate aim is to stay in power as long as possible

Fred1new - 01 Dec 2015 19:43 - 65711 of 81564

And to hell with the Ukraine etc.

Stanley - Yourself and Fred daily, without fail, whinge and moan about the Tories. Not a problem as far as I'm concerned that is your prerogative. But baffles me how you can defend the antics of Corbyn, he is the biggest embarrassment to the Labour Party since Michael Foot. Great for the Cons and long may it last! :0)

CC, Don't confuse your inaccurate charges with the exposures of said "Con" party.

“You may be confused about why we are bombing Iraq and Syria. So we will make ourselves very clear.

We support the Iraqi government in the fight against ISIS.

We don’t like ISIS, but ISIS has been supported by Saudi Arabia, whom we do like, and Saudi Arabia is now supporting us in bombing ISIS.

We don’t like President Assad in Syria. We support the fight against him, but not ISIS, which is also fighting against him.

We don’t like Iran, but Iran supports the Iraqi government against ISIS

So some of our friends support our enemies and some of our enemies are our friends, and some of our enemies are fighting against our other enemies whom we want to lose, but we don’t want our enemies who are fighting our enemies to win.

If the people we want to defeat are defeated, they might be replaced by people we like even less.

And all this was started by us invading Iraq to drive out terrorists who weren’t there until we went to drive them out.

We hope you now understand”.

That just about sums it up.

Haystack - 01 Dec 2015 23:34 - 65723 of 81564

Apart from being substantially incorrect. But you would expect that from the Stop the War people, who rarely get anything right. You can see why Corbyn was their chairman.
