Does anyone know if its ok to load excel and word from 98SE on to a m/c that has XP? I think my old m/c is indicating to me that it wants to retire and I would like excel and word on my No.1 m/c but don't want to splash out unnecessarily on Office XP SB.
Thanks
Rob

Rob, do you mean that you want to install MS office 97 from the disc that you used to load it onto your 98SE PC? If so the answer is yes, no problem.

I upgraded the motherboard on the PC to an AOpen AK79G-1394 capable of using faster memory, later processor etc. Using Xp professional as a clean install on a new drive. Installed motherboard drivers and everything was OK.
Obtained the service pack 1 from microsoft and relevent updates, installed them and now the onboard sound doesn't work. Uninstalled and reinstalled the motherboard drivers, still no sound. Device Manager says everything is working and properly installed. The only clue seems to be that in Sound and Audio Devices it states that there is no audio device!, item is greyed out.
I have obtained the latest bios for the motherboard from the net.
This seems to be a conflict between Xp SP1 and the motherboard since the speakers were working when originally installed.
I would be most grateful for any suggestions.

2Abbey, download and install the latest chipset drivers from the Aopen website, as well as the bios. It's the nforce driver. You might as well update the display driver while you're at it assuming you're using the onboard graphics.

Thanks, I'll try that. I am not at present using the onboard display driver as I have to apparently use my own AGP card in order to use DDR400 Ram-doesn't say so on the box however!

The website has a selection of 2 drivers that are suitable for Xp. Bothare in the form of zipped files. I downloaded both and unzipped them. However I am unsure whether they installed. I have not had a problem unzipping and installing on other occassions.
Is there any way to determine which version of the software that I have installed? The Add/Remove program simply states NVidia Display drivers. Worrying enough there doesn't seem to be any mention of audio drivers relating to NVidia.
I'm with you and am convinced that the correct software is not installed. Have I unzipped the files correctly. If not it seems that I should be able to find them on my C Drive and manually install.....

The ones named nvidia nforce should be the chipset driver, including audio. The ones named display are obviously the display drivers. You probably need to unzip them (one at a time in case they unzip to the same file names) and then click on setup or install or something similar to install them.
If you go to Device Manager and click on the audio devices it should tell you the version number of the driver.
I would probably remove the display driver if you're not using the inbuilt graphics.

P.S. unless your AGP card is also NVIDIA of course!

I recently got a new pc and loaded xp, I have a problem with the home page default, it seems that a home page (youfindall) has made itself my default over msn. When I go to options and change it to my preference it is ok until I turn off my pc, when I turn it on again there is the offending home page again! very anoying. I have tried search to find where it is located but it finds nothing any ideas please

Have used Aopen o.k. with SP1
Latest audio drivers here
http://download.aopen.com.tw/downloads/default.asp?firtime=1&keyword=Driver&searchoption=keyword&sel=category&optionfun=typefun
The sound drivers are on that page and not the Nvidia ones!
Also you must leave the old ones on there first
If not roll back windows with a system restore to pre sp1 install
Update with the latest drivers
check it works
then have another go with SP1
If not exchange it for the new Trident Gigabyte Motherboard we use in the TraderPC, Very reliable with all the XP updates.

Thanks for your input Croc. I have been to the site on the page suggested and installed the audio drivers for Xp. I note that they were only released today! Unfortunately my Device manager shows that the Audio Codec Interface and the Audio Processing Unit now have problems, and of course I still have no sound.
I will try rolling back at the weekend when I have more time to troubleshoot problems, and at least this seems a reasonable place to start.

A friend's Windows 98 PC is having regular disappearing fonts problems.
The fonts files in windows\fonts directory disappears on every bootup and had to be re-installed. A bit tedious.
Any ideas appreciated.
