barretec, Might "also" be worth you C&Pasting post 6594 on the dedicated Apple thread which can be accessed from the search on here that I set up last year.

barretec - 18 Feb 2008 20:31 - 6597 of 11003

Optimist, thanks for the reply however I was trying to avoid emulation but might seem the only option or of cause trade via the phone. I have no need for windows so it seems a bit OTT just to trade a few times a month.

Stan, I raised the mac issue on that thread and it was picked up by Moneyam support, I must say I'm concerned re their lack of urgency in addressing what seems a minor detail, in fact another posted even told them what the problem was. I'm sure if it occurred during Vista or XP installation it would have soon been rectified.

MightyMicro - 18 Feb 2008 21:07 - 6598 of 11003

barretec:

MoneyAM was developed to run on the Mac as well as Windows (or any other box with a standard browser and Java, such as Linux). So all should be well, but it seems that there has been a change to Safari of late that caused some minor problems.

As for your CFD provider problems, I find myself speechless at the number of brain-dead developers that are let loose on financial site software. Internet Explorer is such a heap of cr@p that, once you've got something to work with it, it can be the devil's own job to get it to work on standards-compliant browsers. Ask any web developer that isn't married to Bill Gates . . .

I can't speak for MoneyAM, but I understand that they've had a number of difficult issues to deal with of late which seem to be the problems of success. I happen to know that their systems have had to be upsized to deal with much greater loads during all this market volatility. I'm sure they will get to your issue -- after all, the number of Mac users is going up!

Regards

MM

Interesting - and free for good basic - alternative to adobe, for anyone who doesn't know it, which I find quicker and much more user friendly, and according to the boffins at avast, more secure too:http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php

Optimist - 25 Feb 2008 15:36 - 6603 of 11003

Thanks for that Harwick.

If all you want is a PDF reader, check out Sumatra PDF. It's a fast but basic viewer, and will run as a standalone program.

Thanks to you too Optimist.

I have an Asus S5 laptop running XP Pro.

I have just bought some 4gb SDHC camera cards.

None of the card readers I have bought for those cards is recognised in any of the USB slots - but all work OK in the USB slots of the XP Pro PC in my studio.

When I plug these card readers into the Asus I see Other Devices and a yellow exclamation mark in System Devices in the Control Panel.

Oddly my older CF card readers work with no problem.

I believe I am up to date with my Service Packs and will double check in a mo'.

None of the three card readers I have bought have driver disks as they are supposed to work without one under XP Pro. So they do on one machine. Any clues as to how I can get them to work on the Asus please?

Thanks in advance for any help.

TP fwiw - I have a intergral sd card reader and a free gift usb sd card reader. No problems with either on my ASUS. Sorry - no advice to offer.

Was anybody affected by an internet outage yesterday afternoon? My Sky broadband went down at 3:07pm and wasn't back until this morning. Dora from Delhi in Sky Technical Support claimed it was a global outage to do with the earthquake, but when I pointed out that the earthquake had happened over 12 hours before the service went down, she seemed pretty clueless.

Seymour Clearly - 28 Feb 2008 08:07 - 6608 of 11003

Pipex at home Hil and NTL / Virgin at work, both fine throughout the whole period.

hilary - 28 Feb 2008 08:46 - 6609 of 11003

Thanks, Seymour. I asked the question because none of my friends or family had a problem and I couldn't find anything about a major outage on the internet.

Next question: Why do I hate Batty Bits in call centres?

Bolshi - 28 Feb 2008 09:53 - 6610 of 11003

hilary. My Sky broadband was ok all afternoon.
All my Sky contacts have always been in Glasgow, can't understand a word. Have they changed?

hilary - 28 Feb 2008 11:56 - 6611 of 11003

Bolshi,

The ones in Scotland are OK, but I seem to remember from when I moved to Sky that they also have call centres in Ireland and the Far East somewhere (Malaysia maybe???).

Yesterday I got the one in the Far East. They're as nice as pie out there, but about as much use as a pork sausage at a bar mitzvah. I normally ask them what the weather's like in London today.

ThePublisher - 28 Feb 2008 12:04 - 6612 of 11003

hil,

"I normally ask them what the weather's like in London today. "

We got on well when we were just back from a holiday in Rajasthan. Lots of things to chat about when the help advice asked for an (inevitably slow) re-boot!

I'm trying to send a screenshot and it seems I need Paint as part of the process. But I haven't Paint listed in my Accessories list. Any ideas anyone. I'm running
XP Pro. TIA

Optimist - 28 Feb 2008 12:29 - 6614 of 11003

TOK

You should be able to get by with any graphics application, most of which are better than paint.

If you do need paint, Control Panel / Add or Remove Programs / Click the Add or Remove Windows components and drill down the Accessories where you will find it. Check its box and keep clicking OK.

The Other Kevin - 28 Feb 2008 13:22 - 6615 of 11003

Thanks Optimist. Going round and round in circles with adding Windows Components. Keep being told to insert the disc but it won't install paint.exe. Grrrr!!!
