If they were OK this AM then it is almost certainly not an issue with your kit although you could try powering down your router just in case.

The other thing you could do is open a command window on the laptop, type ipconfig /all followed by enter and paste the result here.

hewittalan6 - 19 Mar 2008 11:45 - 6675 of 11003

Hi Optimist,
Rebooted router and laptop, to no avail.
Did as you suggested but the results are a huge list, and I cannot cut & paste to here as it is not online.
What should I be looking for on the results of that test?

Alan

PS I did notice the IP address it has is different from the one this machine has, if that is significant, but the difference is minor.

Optimist - 19 Mar 2008 12:04 - 6676 of 11003

Alan

The IP address should be different from your other machine but only in the last set of figures.

The thing to check out is the default gateway and DNS addresses which should be the same as on your working machine.

On the machine that is not working, can you see your main machine in network neighbourhood?

hewittalan6 - 19 Mar 2008 14:11 - 6677 of 11003

No Optimist,
They are not networked in any true sense, the laptops simply connect via the same router as the desktop.
I will check the default gateway and DNS address now.
Thanks,

Alan

hewittalan6 - 19 Mar 2008 14:17 - 6678 of 11003

Just checked with th command prompts and they are both showing the same addresses for default gateway and DNS.
I'm starting ot think it is an AOL fault after all.
Alan

Optimist - 19 Mar 2008 14:47 - 6679 of 11003

I agree but I still think it could be a proxy server issue. Either way its down to AOL

You could try to ping both yor router and an external address from wach machine and see what happens. Also can you ping each machine from the other?

hewittalan6 - 19 Mar 2008 15:02 - 6680 of 11003

I have no idea, Optimist, on the basis that I don't understand.
The AOL helpline still has the recorded message and I am now way beyond my limited expertise!!!!
Both machines see and connect to the router, for certain. I doubt they would see each other because I have never created a network of them (TBH I don't know how - I would love to so I can print from either without having to plug cables in).
I think I may have to see what this evening / tomorrow brings with AOL, because after your help, i feel certain its their fault. Don't understand how but perhaps the server issue creates some kind of capacity problem and defaults to one ip address only.
Don't know. Into that dangerous area to the non literate known as guessing ;-))
Thanks for all your help,
Alan

Looking to upgrade my webcam, would like to know which one gives the best picture quality and best for high video output, in the region of DVD or HD size anything above 1200x800 resolution etc

Even a pocket DVD record that can be used as a webcam would be best ;-) its mainly the output video resolution I am interested in, the high the better ;-)

price no more than 300

Are you a net junkie?

If you answer 'yes' to five or more of these questions, you may have an internet addiction.

Do you feel preoccupied with the internet? (Think about your online activity or anticipate your next online session.)

Do you need increasing amounts of time on the net in order to achieve satisfaction?

Have you repeatedly made unsuccessful efforts to control, cut back or stop internet use?

Do you feel restless, moody, depressed, or irritable when attempting to cut down or stop internet use?

Do you stay online longer than originally intended?

Have you jeopardised or risked the loss of a significant relationship, job, educational or career opportunity because of the internet?

Have you lied to family members, a therapist or others to conceal the extent of your involvement with the internet?

Do you use it to escape from problems (eg, feelings of helplessness, guilt, anxiety, depression)?

And the prognosis?

Apparently, it's not all that good..... :-(

I think you were asking about webcams and IP cameras? Maplin, the electronics specialist have a wide range of this kind of stuff and have just kicked off with their Sale. You might find something you like with them.

Could somebody tell me please how to change my default web browser from IE to Opera? I use XP Pro.

If I click a link within an Outlook email, it opens a copy of IE. I would like the link to open within a new tab in Opera.

ExecLine - 27 Mar 2008 15:39 - 6686 of 11003

Start

All Programs

Set Program Access and Defaults

hilary - 28 Mar 2008 08:05 - 6687 of 11003

Thanks, Doc, that was my initial thought too.

I seem to have some sort of conflict somewhere though, as I keep getting a Visual C++ Runtime Error when I try to store the changed settings.

Ho Humm.

Optimist - 28 Mar 2008 08:52 - 6688 of 11003

Hilary

I don't use Opera so ca't offer any specific help but in the Firefox options menu there is a button to check (and set) whether it is the default browser. Has Opera got a similar feature?

hilary - 28 Mar 2008 09:04 - 6689 of 11003

If it has, Opti, I really can't see it for looking. I've also looked in Outlook and can't seem to find anything there either.

I know that MM is an Opera fan. I was hoping that he might have a solution.

hilary - 28 Mar 2008 09:44 - 6691 of 11003

Bingo, Doc, I've got it to work. Thanks.

The latest version of Opera has a slightly different menu tree to that suggested within your link, but I've managed to suss it out anyway.

ExecLine - 28 Mar 2008 10:37 - 6692 of 11003

Wi-Fi problems,we use 2 laptops connected to a access point up stairs and has worked great for a couple of years but yesterday we bought a Lexmark wi-fi printer but i can get either the laptops talking to the net or just the printer but cannot get both to talk at the same time.

The wife uses the laptop mainly but i cannot fathom out how to keep the laptop still connected to the net and also be able to use her new printer.

Any help or suggestions on this one please.

Mega........
